As ‘Prospect Member’ Indonesia has been identified as part of the next way of new member development, which focuses on strengthening and localizing our voice for children in strategic middle income countries. Indonesia has been authorized by member ballot to start fundraising locally as a first step towards building a financially sustainable local organization. Future work will also involve developing a strong local governance structure and building key partnerships with local government, the private sector, local civil society among others. Success of the pilot phase will set the Indonesia on a pathway to full membership.

Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Advisor (DRR)

ROLE PURPOSE

As ‘Prospect Member’ Indonesia has been identified as part of the next way of new member development, which focuses on strengthening and localizing our voice for children in strategic middle-income countries. Indonesia has been authorized by member ballot to start fundraising locally as a first step towards building a financially sustainable local organization. Future work will also involve developing a strong local governance structure and building key partnerships with local government, the private sector, local civil society among others. Save the Children is partnering with Google.org to implement a national awareness campaign with BNPB, expected to reach over half a million people, and will focus on ensuring schools are safer and children and communities are better prepared for emergencies. We will increase the number of days children spend learning about disaster risk reduction through a pilot of the Safe Schools Common Approach. This builds on Save the Children’s work with communities during our response to the 2018 Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami, where Save the Children has been working to reunite families, distributing live saving supplies and building temporary learning spaces. This new DRR advisor role will be the primary technical support to implement this new project (75%), while also establishing Save the Children’s DRR programming (25%). The advisor role will support Save the Children’s country strategic goal #5: Increase community and household preparedness and resiliency for children’s well-being in economically vulnerable, poor and disaster-prone areas.
The Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience (DRR) position will provide strategic leadership on DRR and Resilience programming by working closely with DRR specialists in country and at member/regional offices to ensure that technical assistance is of the highest quality, consistency and coherence. The position will lead the development DRR/Resilience strategy in line with the initiatives and strategies of the global movement.. The advisor will ensure that DRR programming is properly integrated in relevant proposals, awards and programs through outreach, advocacy and capacity building efforts. The advisor will also serve as the primary technical focal point on DRR and climate change adaptation for external stakeholders and will be responsible to represent Save the Children at high level meetings with respect to DRR work in Indonesia and globally.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Master’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent work experience
- 5-7 years working experience the field of DRR or humanitarian work
- Familiar with DRR programming in Indonesia
- Understanding the local system, experiences working with high level government agencies at national and provincial level, civil societies, NGOs and academics on issues related to DRR
- Knowledge of project management cycle and experience in project design and development
- Experience in doing research and relevant policy advocacy in the area
- Proven ability to build capacity of others on DRR programming
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
- Fluency in written and spoken Indonesian and English
- Willingness to travel to the field regularly to targeted areas and in the event of an emergency work outside of traditional hours/location
- Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles including rights-based approaches
