Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to empowering societies to
responsibly and sustainably care for nature for the good of humanity. We are
currently looking to fill the following position for our office in Sorong, Papua:
BHS Science and Monitoring Officer
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the monitoring of marine ecosystems throughout the BHS Corridor, based on standardised methodologies/protocols (such as ‘Reefhealth Monitoring’).
- Analyze and prepare scientific reports and recommendations needed for the adaptive management of BHS MPA Network, and prepare regular reports on monitoring and survey results
- Contribute to other conservation-related survey and monitoring - including oceanography surveys, biodiversity surveys, fish spawning aggregations monitoring, turtle nesting monitoring, community fisheries monitoring, marine species survey and monitoring, and other relevant scientific monitoring.
- Assist in designing and updating the BHS Monitoring plan and annual workplans.
- Conduct capacity building initiatives by training locals on simple marine resources monitoring methods in order to raise involvement of local people in marine management.
- As needed, contribute to various BHS partner initiatives including RARE campaigns and ‘Fish Forever’, surveys of sharks and rays, mangrove surveys and collaborative research/monitoring.
- Conduct/oversee proper maintenance of all monitoring equipments including dive equipment.
- Communicate the goals of CI’s programs to the local communities, governments and other relevant stakeholders
Qualifications:
- Marine science degree with at least 2-3 years of practical experience on conducting marine survey, with some degree of specialty in fish, coral health, marine fisheries or conservation of key marine species.
- Ability to work in remote areas for extended periods
- Certified diver
- Able to communicate and good presentations, and work as a team
- Have technical ability to explain an interpreting the scientific data, and write a regular report
- Fluent in English (speaking, reading and writing) and able to write reports in both languages
- Knowledge and experience in conducting marine survey including data management using the existing software
- Knowledge and experience in working with broad range of local stakeholders, including local government, private sectors, local NGOs, etc.
- Management experience, particularly of research and/or development projects in the field.
- Some experience of socio-economic survey would be an advantage
