Barefoot Conservation is a new and
exciting, not-for-profit organisation that takes a fresh look at
marine conversation and community awareness. All of the Barefoot staff
share the same passion for making a real difference at a grass root
level on all our projects.
Our focus is grass roots conservation and community action. Our aim
is to engage, educate and empower the local community to make
sustainable conservation a way of life, not just a project.
We are currently looking for "Project Scientists" for our Raja Ampat,
West Papua/Indonesia marine conservation projects through out 2015.
This is a great opportunity to join an enthusiastic, energic team and
make a real difference in the worlds most bio-diverse marine region,
and one of the truly last diving frontiers.
There may also be the possibility for a more permanent position with
Barefoot Conservation in the future for the right candidate.
***The ideal candidate will have a PADI Divemaster (or equivalent) qualification (though it is not essential for applying)***
Principal Function
To create, manage and oversee the science Training Programme for our
Raja Ampat and Bali projects. Responsible for supervising the habitat
survey dives, all data collection and managing the on-site science team.
Represent Barefoot Conservation at all local government, project
partners, stakeholders and community meetings. Provide detailed reports,
analysis and project goals updates at above mentioned meetings.
General role description
- Development and implementation of the Science Training Programme.
- Supervise the coordination of the daily habitat survey dives.
- Prepare project reports, data analysis and goal updates, then present findings at various high level meetings.
- Training and managing of Science Officers and any Project Science Interns.
- Design and implement the Science Education Program for the local community and government officials.
- Assist the Site Project Manager with project administration and logistics.
- Take on the role of 'Project Site Manager' when he/she is off site.
- When necessary teach the Science Training Programme to new volunteers.
- Liaise with the Overseas Community Manager to ensure the science and community programs run smoothly together side by side.
Main duties & Responsibilities
In Field Operations:
- Develop a comprehensive Science Training Programme (STP) specific to the region; provide training to any Science Officers so they can teach the programme to volunteers. Then supervise the overall running of the STP and Science team. When necessary teach this program yourself to the volunteers.
- Supervise the research and habitat survey dive programme, ensure the smooth running of the programme and that all data is collected correctly. Plan the strategies for continuing these research survey dives on a daily to 6 month basis, in collaboration with other expedition staff. Take part in the dive surveys and STP when needed.
- Create and implement a Science/Environment Education Program for the local community & local government officials. This program will be used to provide education on sustainability & environmental issues.
- Hold regular meetings with local government, project partners, stakeholders and local community’s to present Barefoots findings and analysis of data collected.
- Provide weekly reports to Barefoots UK office detailing the progress made and any major project concerns from a science point of view.
- Provide monthly updates for both Barefoots UK office and for presentation to local government, project partners and local community.
Logistics:
- Assist the Project Site Manager with the logistical operations and administration of the expedition, including but not limited to; management of all staff, project accounts, project health & safety, addressing volunteers issues/concerns, identifying and sourcing of project equipment and resource management.
- Deputise for the Project Site Manager (PSM) while he/she is off site, ensuring the smooth operation of the expedition continues in PSM's absence. Resolve all staff/volunteers disputes amicably and professionally.
Others:
- When necessary write science reports and other documentation for the company’s website.
- Any other tasks as required by the Project Site Manager, Head of Operations and Managing Director/CEO.
Terms & Conditions
Contract Duration:- 6 contract, with possibility of extension at end of contract term.
Salary:- Up to £1000 per year depending on length of
contract, level of experience, candidates qualifications and
personal performance during contract term.
Accommodation/Food:- Provided at Raja Ampat project site.
Travel/Visa:- Travel to the expedition site must be
paid for by the candidate, all visa extensions will be paid for by
Barefoot Conservation*
Training:- Free PADI Rescue and Divemaster courses**
