Commodity Training Designer Consultant

The Sustainable Landscapes Partnership (SLP) is an innovative public-private partnership in Indonesia that brings governments, communities, businesses, and non-governmental organizations together to develop and test new approaches to land use planning and management.  It is aimed at creating sustainable agricultural economic opportunities, while maintaining natural capital and avoiding deforestation and associated greenhouse gas emissions. 

PURPOSE OF THIS CONSULTANCY
SLP requires a Training Designer (short-term consultant or institution) to work with SLP’s technical team and short-term consultants to adapt existing training materials from multiple sources and develop SLP training modules that incorporate key principles of adult education and participatory learning methods and that integrate SLP Key Messages related to sustainable agriculture production of specific commodities, specifically rubber, coffee, oil palm, sugar palm, and cocoa. 
The consultant will need to develop a template for the training modules, Facilitator’s Guide, Participant’s Guide, visuals/flipcharts for the participants, power-points (if necessary), pre and post-training evaluation forms, and observe training implementation to test out and fine-tune the materials.
OBJECTIVES OF THIS CONSULTANCY
  • Review existing manuals and modules and where necessary develop a set of SLP training modules on key commodity areas (cocoa, rubber, coffee, palm oil and sugar palm), working closely with SLP trainers and technical specialists to adapt existing materials from multiple sources; 
  • Oversee a review panel or workshop comprised of SLP, CI-HQ staff, government agencies and private sector partners who will review the training materials to ensure consistency and quality of the training materials and compliance with GoI requirements and CI’s vision of Sustainable Landscapes; 
  • Ensure that materials are practically focused, based on techniques and recommendations that will support improved on and off-farm cultivation for these specific commodities;
  • Ensure that all quality, post-harvest handling and issues linked with market access are aligned with current industry/requirements and NOT on theoretical requirements. The consultant should work closely with SLP team, consultants and private sector partners to ensure that materials are both practical and relevant;
  • Ensure that the methodology, process, topics are founded on practical field training and learning-by-doing rather than class-room based theory;
  • Ensure that the materials are appropriate, specific to Indonesia conditions and requirements in the field;
  • Ensure that all materials have been reviewed and endorsed in writing by local district and national government agencies;
  • Work with SLP trainers to test out the training modules in the field and fine-tune them.
LEVEL OF EFFORT 
 
This consultancy will take place for 60 days over a 3-month period between October 25, 2014 and January 25, 2015, and will require travel to the SLP field sites in North Sumatera. 
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • MA degree in agriculture, agroforestry, or related field; 
  • More than 10 years’ experience in training design and facilitation in the agriculture sector, with solid experience in adult education and participatory training principles; 
  • Strong mentoring and capacity building skills in the area of training design, implementation and assessment; 
  • Fluency in Indonesia and English (required); 
  • Previous work experience in Indonesia; 
  • Available during the period of service; 
  • Based in Jakarta or Medan and willing to travel and work in SLP field sites in North Sumatera.
