CIFOR Vacancy: Communications Officer, Climate Change - Bogor

OverviewThe Communications Officer will be part of CIFOR’s well-funded and far-reaching communications program. Known for its innovation, ambition and reach, CIFOR’s communications program is designed to maximize the outcomes and impacts of research projects.

The Communications Officer will be instrumental in planning and running communications campaigns for specific projects, especially for research and policy uptake related to climate change and sustainable development. 

The ideal candidate will have a passion for communicating scientific research, including biophysical sciences, economics, political science, social science and anthropology, among others. She/he will be a strong writer and creative planner, who enjoys finding innovative ways to make complex research findings accessible for a broad audience, especially policymakers. 

The Communications Officer will work with a high-caliber, multicultural team of communications and knowledge-sharing professionals. International travel to the field or conferences may be required.

Summary of Responsibilities 
  • Design and implement innovative and effective communications plans for specific research outputs or projects, especially in relation to climate change, in collaboration with CIFOR scientists, partners and Regional Communications Coordinators 
  • Work with scientists and CIFOR’s multimedia team to create high-quality and conceptually strong communications tools (e.g. blogs, multimedia packages, press releases, factsheets, infographics, events etc.), as applicable to the target audience and project requirements 
  • Support the leader of the knowledge-sharing module of CIFOR’s Global Comparative Study on REDD+ in planning, implementing and coordinating communications activities and publication dissemination 
  • Support the Outreach Manager, Regional Communications Coordinators (Africa, Asia, Latin America) and Events Manager in planning and implementing communications activities
Requirements

Education, Knowledge and Experience
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in communications, policy, development, environment or a related discipline 
  • At least 5 years of professional work experience in media/communications or related field, preferably internationally 
  • Proven understanding of or experience in climate policy desirable 
  • A strong writer and editor with a flair for turning complex research findings into accessible content 
  • Experience in implementing strategic communications programs 
  • Experience in working for a research facility or within the development sector an advantage 
  • Fluency in English essential. Other languages an advantage

Terms and Conditions
  • This is an internationally recruited position.  
  • CIFOR offers attractive and globally competitive compensation and benefits, commensurate with skills and experience.  
  • The appointment will be for a period of 2 year(s), inclusive 6 months probationary period, with a possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of this project and position and available resources. 
  • Duty station will be at CIFOR Headquarters in Bogor, Indonesia
