Terms and Condition

Start Date: April 2019
Duration of Contract: One-year fix- term Contract, with potential to extend
Work Area: Jambi
Reporting to: Tiger Research and Monitoring Coordinator

Key Purpose of the Job

This role is to assist the Tiger Research and Monitoring Coordinator in conducting field surveys and collecting data/information across Berbak-Sembilang-Dangku Landscape (Berbak & Sembilang National Parks and the Dangku Wildlife Reserve).

Responsibility for Resources


People

The Tiger Field Survey Member will report directly to the Tiger Research and Monitoring Coordinator, and indirectly to the Tiger Conservation Project Manager.

Financial Resources

The post holder will ensure accurate recording and reporting of all financial transactions in the Jambi office and that all transactions are in compliance with ZSL standard operating procedures and the contractual agreement with the UK government.

Main duties and key responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing survey plan, map, logistics and survey equipment for survey team;
  • Oversee full completion of fieldwork;
  • Collect field data as directed by the Tiger Research and Monitoring Coordinator and Tiger Conservation Project Manager;
  • Assist with the all field survey equipment maintenance;
  • Ensure that data is collected accurately according to methodology, specifically, data on wildlife habitat, and level of threats of Sumatran Tigers and other wildlife species;
  • Develop field report on post-field activities;
  • Assist with data input of data collected in the field as required;
  • Assist with GIS data analysis as required and,
  • Other general project-related responsibilities as and when required.
Building relationships
  • Establish and manage communication and coordination with other ZSL teams and ZSL Partners, including National Park (NP) authority and communities across Berbak-Sembilang-Dangku Landscape.
  • This post will require strong collaboration with NP Officers.
Mental Demands
  • This post will be mentally demanding often requiring the ability to make quick decisions in unanticipated situations, finding solutions and deciding upon the best strategy.
Flexibility
  • This post will be based primarily in the field.
  • Flexibility is important; the flexibility to work extended hours, weekends and holidays may be necessary.
Working Conditions
  • A substantial proportion of the post-holders time will be spent in field conditions whether this is for training or project implementation purposes.

PERSON QUALIFICATION

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in Biology and Forestry and/or another related field with equivalent experience
  • Prior experience in conservation work
  • Minimum 5 years’ successful experience working in a similar position with an international NGO.
Knowledge
  • An understanding of wildlife conservation principal and its practice.
  • An understanding of the current challenges facing wildlife population especially Sumatran Tiger 
  • Basic understanding of animal’s physiology will be an advantage
  • Familiar with landscape – level conservation and its practice.
  • Knowledgeable of government agencies of which related to conservation work
  • Good proficiency in English would be preferable
Skills & Abilities
  • Computer literacy (excellent IT skills); competent in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and other MS tools
  • Familiar with conservation – related software programme e.g GIS (Arcview, MapSource), SMART would be an advantage
Other Requirements
  • Having a valid driving license for car and motorbike would be an advantage;
