About GGGI

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is the world’s newest international organization. Headquartered in Seoul, it is a new kind of international organization – interdisciplinary, multi-stakeholder and driven by the priorities of emerging and developing economies. GGGI was established by a group of eighteen governments pursuant to a treaty signed at the United Nations Rio+20 conference in June 2012.

GGGI is dedicated to supporting developing and emerging countries to meet their own development and growth objectives by exploring and implementing green growth plans that simultaneously target key economic and environmental goals. These include poverty reduction, job creation and social inclusion as well as mitigation and adaptation to climate change, biodiversity loss and energy and water security.

GGGI’s theory of change leads it to focus on three major outcomes:

  • Development and implementation of rigorous green growth plans that form the core of national and provincial economic development strategies;
  • Research that builds a strong theoretical and empirical basis for green growth while providing concrete options and guidance for policymakers, and;
  • Public-private partnerships that strengthen incentives for the scaling of resource-efficient investment and innovation.
GGGI is already providing technical assistance and capacity building support to over a dozen developing and emerging economies as part of the Green Growth Planning and Implementation (GGP&I) program. These countries are seeking to capitalize on the potential co-benefits of strong socio-economic and environmental process as well as gain better access to the public and private finance and technology that can help place their economies on a more sustainable and resilient development pathway.

GGGI has launched several cutting-edge research and public-private partnerships with leading international institutions and the organization’s strategic plan envisions considerable growth over the next three years.

Since 2010 GGGI has been supporting the green growth process in Indonesia, initially at the provincial level in Central Kalimantan and East Kalimantan, but now with a comprehensive program that is led by the National Planning Agency (Bappenas). The Government of Indonesia (GoI) - GGGI Green Growth Program (GGP) began in early 2013 and is divided into three components. Component 2 of the GoI-GGGI GGP works to ensure that REDD+ finance, programs and policies catalyze green growth in Indonesia and is carried out in collaboration with the national REDD+ Agency, as well as relevant sub-national agencies in Central Kalimantan and East Kalimantan.
