ZSL International Job Vacancy: Wildlife Crime Investigation Unit Team Member, Jambi

The Zoological Society of London is an international wildlife conservation organization with a focus on science based and pragmatic solutions. ZSL has been active in Indonesia for about 10 years, with a particular focus on the overlap between industrial development and biodiversity conservation. ZSL Indonesia is based in Bogor, West Java, with existing field projects in Jambi and South Sumatera. We are now looking for:

Wildlife Crime Investigation Unit Team Member

Duration of Contract: One-year fix- term Contract, with potential to extend

Reporting to: Wildlife Crime Investigation Unit Coordinator

Key Purpose of the Job
This role is to undertake investigation activities to aid in the crack down and prevention of illegal action such as wildlife poaching and trading in Berbak-Sembilang Landscape (Berbak & Sembilang National Parks and the Dangku Wildlife Reserve). Prevention activities include tracking illegal wildlife trade lanes,and managing a network of informations around Berbak-Sembilang and/or Jambi – South Sumatera Province. Collaborate with law enforcement agencies in activities that may/or may not lead to the arrests of people undertaking illegal wildlife activites.

Responsibility for Resources

People

• The Wildlife Crime Investigation Unit – Team Member will report directly to the Wildlife Crime Investigation Unit
• Coordinator, and indirectly report to the Tiger Conservation Project Manager.
• Financial Resources
• The post holder will ensure accurate recording and reporting of all financial transactions in Jambi office and that all transactions are in compliance with ZSL standard operating procedures and the contractual agreement with the UK government.

Main duties and key responsibilities

• Collect data about poaching activities and actors involved;
• Implementing and involve in wildlife investigators activities and the informant network in the Berbak Sembilang Landscape;
• Communicate with relevant stakeholders such as Police District, Ministry of Enviromnment and Forestry (MoEF), and investigators and traditional leaders;
• Conducting undercover investigation activities in villages and other areas ensuring anonymity by blending in with the local community;
• Weekly reporting to the Wildlife Crime Investigation Unit Coordinator; and,
• Other general project-related responsibilities as and when required.

Building relationships

• Establish and manage communication and coordination with other ZSL teams and ZSL Partners, including National Park (NP) authority and communities across landscape.
• This post will require strong collaboration with NP Officers.
• Communicate and coordination with stakeholders specifically law enforcement agencies (LEA) including the Indonesian Police Distrct and MoEF investigators.

Mental Demands

• This post will be mentaly demanding often requiring the ability to make quick decisions in unanticipated situations, finding solutions and deciding upon the best strategy.

Flexibility

• This post will be based primarily in field.
• Flexibility is important; the post holder to be able to respond to changing priorities as required and the fact that the post-holder will often be working undercover.

Working Conditions

• This post is based in Jambi, Sumatra
• A substantial proportion of the post-holder’s time will require extensive work dealing with wildlife poachers and traders.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience

• Minimum of bachelor’s degree
• Experience working in the forest, specifically peat swamp forest
• Extensive experience in wildlife conservation or a closely related area;
• Prior experience in local community project.

Knowledge

• An understanding of Indonesian legal procedures and processes on crime investigation activities;
• Prior in-depth knowledge of the wildlife trade in Indonesia.

Skills & Abilities

• Computer literacy (excellent IT skills); competent in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and other MS tools
• Familiar with conservation – related software programme e.g GIS (Arcview, MapSource), SMART would be an advantage

Other Requirements

• Having a valid driving licence for car and motorbike
