Position Title: RISE Construction Supervisor
Program: Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments (RISE)
Reporting to: Construction Manager (Makassar), Objective 1 Makassar Lead (Melbourne), Country Coordinator (Makassar)
Duty Station: Makassar, Indonesia
Duration: 6 months, extendable based on performance


Background:
Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments (RISE) is a design-research program, which aims to demonstrate that a Water Sensitive Cities (WSC) approach to water and sanitation management can improve human and ecological health in informal settlements. The program is operating in 24 informal settlements across Makassar, Indonesia and Suva, Fiji.

The WSC interventions of the RISE project operate on varying scales – household, neighbourhood, and precinct. They include built elements, such as sanitation and drainage improvements, rainwater harvesting facilities and green infrastructure (wetlands). The success of the RISE interventions will be measured by the health and well-being of residents – particularly children under five years of age – and the ecological diversity of the surrounding environment.

The Role:
The RISE program is currently seeking a Construction Supervisor to join our Build team in Makassar responsible for the delivery of construction projects with support from our Construction Manager. We are looking for someone with civil construction experience, is passionate about working with communities and can motivate people to deliver quality work in a safe manner. The candidate will be working within a diverse team of construction specialists, engineers, architects, researchers and community fieldworkers who are based in both Makassar and Melbourne.

Key responsibilities:
  • Support the management of construction activities including work planning, budgeting, production of tender documentation, contractor procurement and construction supervision;
  • Undertake quality inspections and assess works in accordance with the drawings, specifications, local standards and regulations;
  • Supervise health and safety of all personnel onsite; 
  • Daily meetings with the contractor and community throughout project implementation to coordinate the works and proactively resolve issues as they arise;
  • Monitor and report on work progress, social and environmental safeguards to team members in Makassar and Melbourne;
  • Coordination with third parties including surveyors, suppliers, detailed design consultants, local authorities, staff and partners;
Required Skills and Experience
  • At least a Bachelor degree in engineering, construction, or related discipline;
  • At least three years of experience with:
    • Supervision of construction projects;
    • Urban water, sanitation infrastructure design and systems;
    • Familiarity with community-based development;
  • Use of excel spreadsheet for costing and planning activities;
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written);
  • Bilingual (Bahasa Indonesia and English);
