Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments Job Vacancy: Project Architect / Engineer, Makassar - South Sulawesi

Terms of Reference
Position Title: Project Architect/Engineer
Program: Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments (RISE)
Reporting to: Build Team Leader (Makassar), Objective 1 Lead Makassar (Melbourne), Country Coordinator (Makassar)
Duty Station: Makassar, Indonesia
Duration: 6 months, extendable based on performance


Background:
Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments (RISE) is a design-research program, which aims to demonstrate that a Water Sensitive Cities (WSC) approach to water and sanitation management can improve human and ecological health in informal settlements. The program is operating in 24 informal settlements across Makassar, Indonesia and Suva, Fiji.

The WSC interventions of the RISE project operate on varying scales – household, neighbourhood, and precinct. They include built elements, such as sanitation and drainage improvements, rainwater harvesting facilities and green infrastructure (wetlands). The success of the RISE interventions will be measured by the health and well-being of residents – particularly children under five years of age – and the ecological diversity of the surrounding environment.

The Role
The RISE program is currently seeking a Project Architect/ Engineer to join our Build team in Makassar supporting the detailed design development of WSC infrastructure for the RISE sites. We are looking for someone that is a great designer, is passionate about working with communities and is capable of taking on a leadership role in the implementation of specific work activities. The candidate will be working within a diverse team of construction specialists, engineers, architects, researchers and community fieldworkers who are based in both Makassar and Melbourne.

Key responsibilities:
  • Support with the collection of data in the field for design implementation;
  • Leading and supporting facilitation of co-design activities and workshops with communities;
  • Develop technical and social design solutions in response to the co-design output brief;
  • Evaluate and select construction materials and products;
  • Coordination with third parties including surveyors, suppliers, detailed design consultants, local authorities, program staff and partners; 
  • Support with reporting, design documentation and costing;
  • Lead on specific work activities for project implementation;
Technical Skills

  • Significant AutoCAD experience
  • Knowledge of QGIS preferred
  • Proficient hand drawing
  • Use of excel spreadsheet for costing and planning activities
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Bilingual (Bahasa Indonesia and English)
Required qualifications and experience:
  • At least a Bachelor degree in engineering, architecture, urban planning/design, or related discipline
  • At least three years of experience with:
    • Designing and managing construction projects;
    • Urban water, sanitation infrastructure design and systems,
    • Familiarity with community-based development and participatory design processes
