TRAINER FOR TRAINING
ON THE LINK BETWEEN SHIFTING CULTIVATION AND DRR
CALL FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

The ACTED is
a French non-profit organization working in over 34
countries worldwide to provide emergency response, early recovery, and
development assistance to communities in need. ACTED's interventions seek to
cover multiple aspects of humanitarian and development crises through a
multidisciplinary approach that is both global and local, and adapted to each
context. ACTED's vision is to establish emergency, rehabilitation, and
development. ACTED aims to guarantee the sustainability of relief interventions
carried out during crises by remaining in the field after the emergency to
engage in long-term support to communities. ACTED's actions are needs based and
identified in a participatory manner with communities in the areas where we are
present.
ACTED
has been active in Indonesia since April 2005 and is
currently implementing a conservation agriculture project in Malaka district,
West Timor, Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT).
1. Project
background
ACTED
and FAO are currently implementing a conservation
agriculture project with 30 farmers groups in Malaka district, West Timor, Nusa
Tenggara Timur. Working across five villages ACTED has provided training to the
30 farmers groups on conservation agriculture and supported the development of
demonstration plots in order to encourage the uptake of conservation
agriculture techniques and reduce food insecurity in the district.
2. Objectives
of the training
ACTED
is seeking applications for trainer to provide a
two 1-day trainings to ACTED staff, farmers groups and local authorities on the
link between shift cultivation and natural disasters including best practices
to reduce shift cultivation in communities. Each 1-day training session will
include approximately 25 participants each. The training will take place in
Betun, Malaka district, NTT.
The training
will have the following key aims:
- Increase understanding of shifting cultivation and its negative impacts on natural resources;
- Increase knowledge on alternative farming techniques;
- Provide information on the relationship between shift cultivation and the reduction in crop yields;
The key topics covered by the training will be:
- What is shift cultivation?
- What is disaster risk reduction?
- What is the impact of shift cultivation in terms of land degration, crop yields and natural disasters, particularly in Malaka district
- What alternatives are there to shift cultivation?
- Question and answer session for participants
The
consultant must have significant experience in the development of best practices on how to reduce shift cultivation. It is anticipated
the consultant will use the following methodologies for the training:
- Use interactive teaching methods (i.e. use of video clips, photos, projector, etc);
- Use of examples and best practice evidence;
- Inclusive and cooperative approach;
- Have pre and post training tests for participants;
- Include a question and answer session at the end of the training day.
3. ACTED
expects the following outputs by the trainer upon completion of the training:
- Participants have improved understanding of shift cultivation and its impact both on natural disasters in Malaka as well as reduced crop yields in the district;
- Farmers and local authorities will have improved knowledge on how to protect natural resources in Malaka district;
- Multi stakeholder will get clear information to provide regulation regarding natural resources management.
- Farmers as well as multi stake holder understand best practice to protect natural resources.
- Submission of a training report. Attached as annexes to this report should be all workshop materials, work plan, attendance sheets and results of pre and post training tests;

5. Professional Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum of Bachelor Degree in agriculture
- Experience on developing module especially for agricultural and livelihood
- Good understanding of the agricultural practices of farmers in Malaka district.
- Extensive experience in developing training modules and materials, specifically trainings which integrate disaster risk reduction
- Good communication skills and written/spoken fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and local language.
- Good interpersonal skills, including patience, self awareness, willing to hear problems and provide solutions.
6. Quotation
Submission
Interested parties shall submit a quotation in following structure;

- CV including at least two references;
- List of similar modules/training materials provided by the individual;
- Quotation for the trainings: this should include all transportation to ACTED’s Malaka office in Betun for training and any other related costs for the duration of the training including accommodation for the trainer. ACTED will cover the cost of the training facilities for the training as well as stationary and refreshments for participants. The consultant has to include in the financial proposition the taxes that will be paid by ACTED (2% of the total amount if the consultant has tax registration number, 4% otherwise). The financial proposition will therefore be a gross amount. All submissions without a quotation will not be eligible.
