Job Title: Medical Officer
Reporting to: Project Site Manager & Head of Operations 
Responsible to: Managing Director/CEO 
Location: Raja Ampat West Papua/Indonesia

Principal Function

Oversee the general health & safety of the expedition and provide medical treatment to all Barefoot staff and volunteers. Organise and manage a general health clinic for the local communities. Design and run a health education programme for the local communities and surrounding villages. Maintenance of medical supplies, introductory health & hygiene briefing for all expedition staff and volunteers. Enforcement of on-site health and safety measures.

General role description
  • Provide health care and emergency medical treatment to all company personel, expedtion volunteers and local scholarship candidates.
  • Run a general health clinic for the local village communities.
  • Maintenance of all medical supplies and equipment on site, keeping control of stock levels.
  • Maintenance of all expedition staff and volunteer medical records.
  • Submit regular reports to the Head of Operations.
  • Hold introductory briefings with new expedition personel on health and hygiene while on site.
  • Enforce all Barefoot Conservation policies and procedures on expedition health and safety while on site.

Main duties & Responsibilities 

  • Provide general health care for the expedition team, including local staff if needed. Deal with all emergency medical situations that may arise, including organising emergency evacuations in the unlikely event this is needed.
  • Design, organise and manage a general clinic for the local communities, to be run every two weeks, or more regular should the need arise. This health clinic will involve education on general health care, hygiene and prevention methods. The clinic is not designed to replace the local hospital but work in partnership with it. If possible a representative from the local hospital will be present during these health clinics.
  • Provide new staff, volunteers and scholars with an expedition health & hygiene briefing on their arrival. This MUST happen within 24hrs of their arrival. 
  • Undertake the two week Science Training Programme (STP) and once qualified take part in science survey dives when necessary and available. Help the science team with new recruits to the STP by taking them on spot dives.
  • Bi-weekly reports must be submitted to the Head of Operations, detailing all medical incidents that have happened during that 2 weeks, with out revealing confidential information. In this report must be accurate details of stock levels for medical supplies and equipment.

Logistics

  • Assist with the logistical operations and administration of the expedition and STP when needed.
  • Keep up to date accurate records of all medical supplies and equipment on site, including regular stock takes. When necessary source replacements or new supplies for out of date stock from the nearest town or city.
  • Maintain accurate medical records for each expedition team member, volunteer and local staff if necessary, Make sure these records remain confidential and that all individuals feel comfortable to approach you in confidence. 

Other

  • When necessary write progress reports for the health clinic and other documentation for the company’s website.
  • Any other task as required by the Head of Operations or Managing Director/CEO.

Terms & Conditions

Contract Duration:
  • 6 month contract, with possibility of extension at end of contract term.
Salary:
  • Up to £1000 per annum end of contract bonus, depending on level of experience, candidates qualifications and personal/company performance during contract term.
Accommodation/Food:
  • Basic shared accom and food/drinks provided at Raja Ampat project site.

Visa:
  • All visa extensions will be paid for by Barefoot Conservation*
Training:
  • Free PADI AOW, EFR, PADI Rescue Diver and Divemaster courses**
* Initial Social Visa fee and first renewal must be paid by the candidate.
** Does NOT include necessary PADI manuals and PIC's
