Blacksmith Institute is a United States-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to solving toxic pollution problems in low-to-middle income countries where human health is most at risk. Started its work in Indonesia in 2008, since then Blacksmith has been able to scale up the works that are currently more focused on the mitigation of environmental and health impacts from mercury contamination from the artisanal and small-scale gold mining activities and lead contamination from used lead-acid battery (ULAB) recycling.

Blacksmith Institute Vacancy: Financial Officer, Jakarta

In doing the works, Blacksmith has nurtured the relationships with multi-stakeholders, incl. donors, government agencies, and national/local NGOs. For the next two years, Blacksmith, with the technical assistance from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), will be leading the project implementation which seeks to promote the environmentally sound management of two sources of potential lead poisoning, lead in paint and ULABs, in ways that minimize significant adverse effects on human health and the environment.

Financial Officer Job Responsibilities


  • Responsible for the overall integrity of the accounting records.
  • Collect monthly timesheets, expense reports, credit card forms, and donated services forms (and bank statement(s) and reconciliation reports, if applicable) from Indonesia Country Coordinator, support staff, subcontracts, and local consultants.
  • Ensure that items are coded properly, have adequate transaction descriptions, have proper supporting documentation, and have appropriate authorization.
  • Assist in other finance department tasks, such as creating and maintaining budgets, producing various financial reports (including grant reports), and analyzing cash flow.
  • Communicate with staff regarding items missing and/or necessary corrections and ensure that items are received and corrected.
  • Relay all accounting documents to the New York HQ for submission to funding agencies (ADB, GEF, etc.)
  • Assist with providing documentation necessary for incorporation and other administrative responsibilities
  • Maintain grant binders and electronic files (to include proposal, grant agreement, amendments, progress reports, and relevant correspondence related to the funder and those of any relevant partner organization(s)).
  • Update budgets monthly.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and petty cash monthly.
  • Provide other accounting tasks as assigned.

Skills Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance and/or at least 5 years of experience in non-profit accounting; working knowledge of QuickBooks Enterprise, Excel and Word; comfortable working with various foreign currencies; well-organized and pro-active; able to multi-task; and work well both independently and as part of a team.

Experience with multilateral organizations such as the United Nations, the Asian Development Bank, World Bank of comparable. Fluency in English.

This position is based in Jakarta, and the incumbent reports directly to the Indonesia Country Coordinator and the Finance Manager (New York).
