FISHERIES COORDINATOR FOR LSSFI
The Fisheries Coordinator (Coordinator) supports the implementation of the Lesser Sunda Sustainable Fisheries Initiative (LSSFI) by working closely with local governments, community groups and other stakeholders in Sumbawa and wider Lesser Sunda region to advocate for sustainable fisheries management. LSSFI is a partnership between TNC, private sector and government to promote sustainable utilization and management of near shore fisheries in the Lesser Sunda region. The Coordinator will be part of this LSSFI team and mainly coordinates TNC involvement to strengthen LSSFI social and governance aspects to ensure program success. S/he will work closely with local NGOs, fishers group and other relevant stakeholders to ensure their meaningful and beneficial participation in this initiative.
Under the supervision of LSSFI Manager, s/he develops, supports and/or coordinates introduction of new innovative sustainable fisheries management concept, including pairing Territorial use right in fisheries management (TURF) and marine protected areas to local stakeholders that eventually yield in gaining support from them on the concept. The Coordinator supports to establish fisher groups or cooperatives to allow effective participation of local fishers and relevant stakeholders in the project. S/he explains the importance of this sustainable fisheries initiative and conserving the fisheries and develops campaign materials to this end, in line with the program’s goals and objectives. S/he supports annual work planning and budgeting as well as submission of periodic financial reports and project reports, develops and maintains key TNC partnerships and builds constituents that support LSSFI and their effective management. S/he monitors progress and proposes adaptations of the work plan to supervisors if required. The Coordinator will be supervised by the LSSFI Manager
Specific Duties include:
1. Support establishes and organizes local fishers groups to allow their effective participation at the LSSFI Initiative. This includes development of agreements between fisher groups and LSSFI on their engagement in sustainable fisheries program.
2. Support develops and implements strategy to introduce the right-based fisheries management, territorial use right in fisheries management concepts to local government and stakeholders and gain their buy-in.
3. Establish and maintain good relationships with local community groups, NGOs, government and other relevant stakeholders to support LSSI success.
4. Work closely with BSI and other partners within the LSSFI framework to ensure timely execution of project plan to deliver high quality results.
The Fisheries Coordinator will be based either in Sumbawa or Bali.
Requirements:
· BA/BS, marine affairs, fisheries and/or social anthropology and at least 5 years’ experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience
· Familiarity with the political and cultural environment of West Nusa Tenggara in general
· Explaining conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences, especially local communities
· Ability to communicate and work closely with private sector partners and others relevant stakeholders especially those of local communities
· Working with influential officials, especially local governmental, to improve Conservancy programs’ outcomes
· Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
· Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers)
