About the program
MAHKOTA (Towards a Strong and Prosperous Indonesian Society) is an Australian Government-funded program supporting Government of Indonesia (GoI) to improve its social protection system to reduce poverty and inequality. MAHKOTA operates as a flexible facility that responds to GoI priorities, provides top Indonesian and international expertise as well as allows GoI to attempt innovative policy reforms and initiatives. MAHKOTA’s goals are for a comprehensive and equitable social protection system for the whole of Indonesia by 2025 and to reduce poverty and inequality.
MAHKOTA supports GoI primarily through the Secretariat of the National Team for the Acceleration of Poverty Reduction (TNP2K). MAHKOTA also provides technical assistance to line ministries and local governments implementing social protection programs.
MAHKOTA is providing technical assistance to the provincial government of Papua to design and implement a universal child grant pilot in three districts. The design and budget for the program, known as BANGGA Papua, has recently been approved by the Governor of Papua and the three implementation districts. This will be the first provincial cash transfer in Papua and the Papua government has requested an ongoing technical support from MAHKOTA (for cash transfer operations), KOMPAK (for institutional governance arrangements), and UNICEF (for public communication support, birth registration support and program evaluation).
