About WRI
World Resources Institute (WRI) is an independent national research organization that turns big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity, and human well-being. WRI Indonesia is affiliated with World Resources Institute (WRI), a global environmental research organization that works with various stakeholders to support policies and practices that are sustainable and profitable. WRI works with leaders in more than 50 countries for more than 30 years, with offices in Brazil, China, Europe, Africa, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and the United States.

Launched in early 2014, WRI Indonesia builds on WRI’s 20-year history in the country and the official establishment of WRI Indonesia office has strengthened our impacts on the ground in recent years. Our current work primarily focuses on forest and land-use. Over time WRI Indonesia aims to expand its portfolio to include climate, energy, and city and transportation. Therefore, it is important for the organization to identify and put in place the research building blocks for achieving the vision of WRI Indonesia supporting science- and data-driven decision making at national and sub-national level.

Overview
WRI Indonesia’s research program pursues and innovates diverse approaches to support Indonesia in accelerating low emissions development through a sustainable land use management, improved forest governance, and expansion of renewable energy provision. To achieve this, there are three big questions that guide WRI Indonesia in conducting our projects and research programs.

These questions are:

  • What is the best mechanism to create a balance between forests and peatland protection (GHG emissions reduction) and local livelihood enhancement (job creation, income)?
  • What is the best mechanism to create and sustain an accountable, inclusive and sustainable land use decision making process?
  • How do we monitor and enforce low-carbon, climate resilient practices?
To help answer these questions, the Science and Research Manager will be responsible to manage research activities and products coming out from WRI Indonesia. His/her main responsibilities are: 1) providing an oversight to junior researchers under Wahana Riset Indonesia program, its operational framework, and workplan; 2) assuring that the publications from WRI Indonesia comply to the standards of excellence for all WRI knowledge products; and 3) ensuring that there is a synergy between the on-going research activities with WRI Indonesia’s research roadmap.

The person will report directly to Country Director and work in close coordination with the Global S&R team and project managers/leads at WRI Indonesia. It is expected that he/she will use scientific expertise to enhance the effectiveness of the science in meeting agency needs, particularly regarding low emissions development in Indonesia. The research outcomes are intended to promote innovative solutions and analysis that transform business-as-usual into best practices of data-driven decision making in the sector.
