Position Title: Coordinator of Policy, Advocacy and Communication
Reports to: Head of Programme
Duty Station: Bogor, with potential frequent traveling to project sites
Introduction:
Wetlands International has been working in Indonesia for more than 30 years, with very intensive works on sustainable use of wetlands in Indonesia, including policy, advocacy, and communication works at site, sub-national, national, and international levels. In order to strengthen and ensure the effective policy, advocacy, and communication works of Wetlands International in Indonesia to various levels of audiences, we are recruiting a position for Coordinator of Policy, Advocacy, and Communication.
The overall purpose of the position is to raise Wetlands International Indonesia’s profile by developing and implementing a communication strategy on key themes with key target audiences. This strategy should be supported by a strong media component to build and manage relations with relevant media.
She/he will report to the Head of Programme and work closely with Management Team, Communication Team, Project Coordinators and Staff, and Communication Team of Wetlands International Head of Office in the Netherlands, and other global Wetlands International Offices. She/he is also required to work with NGO Partners, Journalists, and other media contacts, key target audiences, and stakeholders.
Main duties and responsibilities
The main duties of Coordinator of Policy, Advocacy and Communication will include:
Strategic development:
- Develop a communication strategy for the organization, and include plans with the principal themes to focus on. Every plan should target key audiences in consultation with Management Team, Project Coordinator and (technical) staff, spokespersons and Communications Team of both Wetlands International Indonesia and Head Office, NL;
- Support the inclusion of communications in project development, including budgeting;
- Coordinate flow of knowledge and information from the field to the office for the development of impactful content and communications tools;
- Generate impactful content for stories, press releases, videos, among others;
- Coordinate the creation of materials: flyers, videos, infographics, pictures;
- Coordinate the dissemination of communications tools and materials;
- Coordinate design and implementation of media plans in alignment with the communications, policy and advocacy strategies;
- Build and manage relations with relevant media;
- Proactively look for media opportunities (articles, interviews, TV programs, press trips), create impactful content – visually and written - and pitch it to relevant media, respond to media requests and guide spokespersons
- In consultation with relevant Technical Staff, develop position papers on relevant topics for the organization and develop fundamental Q&A’s for the organization;
- Advice on reputational risks and messaging;
- Develop and execute media strategies for key mobilizing moments (national, regional, or international conferences; international awareness and action days; major meetings), including use of print and digital materials, interactive events, or other creative approaches
- Strategize and facilitate effective representation and public relations at meetings and events, and when relevant (co-) organize Wetlands International events;
- Keep contact with key people that are essential for our successful outreach at events (press departments of events, key decision-makers).
Profile: The successful candidate is proactive, creative, results-oriented, optimistic, and flexible, is an outgoing writer with relevant experience on media relationships, and can transform scientific and technical content into effective messaging for different audiences.
Essential skills and experience
- Advanced degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations or social sciences;
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the field communications;
- A relevant media network;
- Experience in writing for traditional media (TV, newspapers, magazines) and digital media (social networks, blogs, etc);
- Demonstrated experience in the development of communications strategies and managing campaigns at a strategic level;
- Knowledge and experience in using analytics for decision-making
- Demonstrated experience in the creation of impactful content
- Experience with journalistic techniques, sensitivity for usage of text, language and images; web site content, reports and/or press releases and ability to communicate success stories in versatile formats;
- Excellent writing skills in Bahasa Indonesia and in English;
- Familiar with NGO working atmosphere is an advantage
- A true belief and passion for conserving and restoring our remaining wetlands around the world.
- InDesign and other publication software basic knowledge
- Experience in a holistic communication approach
- Experienced spokesperson
