Overview
Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country as well as Southeast Asia’s biggest democracy and economy. It hosts the planet’s third largest tropical rainforests and one of its most expansive peat lands, making it home to a wealth of biodiversity and a significant carbon storage. Over half of its 250 million people reside in urban areas, and the livelihoods of more than 60 million others depend on forests. Yet 11% of Indonesia’s population still live under the poverty line, and the nation’s wealth disparity remains stubbornly high. The current administration has made tackling poverty, disparity, and unemployment a priority, while at the same time it has committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 29% below the business-as-usual baseline. To reach this target, most efforts will be concentrated on preventing forest conversion and peat degradation.
The government’s social forestry initiative exists as an approach to overcome poverty problem in villages inside and around forest area while also ensuring that the forests will be managed sustainably. President Jokowi is committed to provide legal access to those dependent on forest resources in more than 12.7 million hectares of forest areas through various social forestry schemes, such as community forestry, village forests, community plantation forests, and customary forests.
WRI Indonesia is committed to provide support to the government’s social forestry initiative, particularly in the fields of social studies research. The objectives of the research undertaken by WRI Indonesia include, but are not limited to, understanding the challenges and enabling factors of social forestry initiative, understanding the indicators or success criteria for social forestry schemes, and examining the effectiveness of social forestry indicative maps.
