European Climate Foundation Job Vacancy: Energy Communications - Jakarta, Indonesian

The European Climate Foundation is seeking a dynamic and experienced communications consultant to support national and international NGOs working on climate and energy issues in Indonesia

The aim of the position is to provide communications assistance to key Indonesian NGOs in order to boost media coverage at the national and international level.

This position is responsible for working with NGOs to develop and implement media work and communication strategies to help achieve the movement’s campaign and communications objectives, as well as to help increase public support for and understanding of the need to move away from high carbon electricity sources and towards renewable energy. It is also designed to ensure key campaign work and stories resonate outside of Indonesia.

CONTRACT: 6 month initial contract with potential for renewal, full-time position preferred

SALARY: Competitive salary commensurate with experience.

LOCATION: Jakarta

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Increase, strengthen and maintain network of national and international on- and off-line media contacts and energy commentators.
  • Work with other communications officers to plan, co-ordinate and execute media activities for national and international media and commentators.
  • Develop communication strategies targeted at national and international audiences to generate stories in mainstream and online media.
  • Elevate compelling regional stories to the national and international level through liaising with regional groups and helping to generate media stories in the national and international media. Monitor regional media and maintain relationships with regional groups so as to be able to identify compelling new stories.
  • Monitor national news coverage on coal and related issues to identify potential for reactive news stories and opeds
  • Help to craft compelling press releases and opeds – preferably in Indonesian and English, but at a minimum in Indonesian.
  • Monitor the trends of international media’s interest for Indonesia’s environmental, as well as other political, economic, and social issues and identify opportunities for placement of media stories on energy issues Be on call after hours and weekends from time to time.
REQUIREMENTS:
Proven track record in the media: Experience in working in the media. Wide knowledge of and enthusiasm for how the national and international media operates in Indonesia. Good contacts in national and international media.

Interpersonal, negotiating and communication abilities: Ability to work within teams, to interact with different stakeholders and sectors, to gain new allies and to promote coalition work.

Organizational and time management skills: Self-driven and ability to work independently and manage complex workloads. Ability to respond quickly to emerging needs and to address fluctuating priorities and tight deadlines.

Research and analytical skills: Ability to evaluate information, plan strategies and undertake effective risk assessment.

Computer skills: Ability to get on top of a variety of computer and internet based tools for communication, analysis and networking. Knowledge of internet culture and familiarity with the tools essential.

Language and writing skills: Excellent Indonesian writing and speaking skills a must. Working ability to communicate, read and write in English essential.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
  • Knowledge of environmental issues in general.
  • Knowledge of international and
  • Indonesia based media, outlets, communication avenues, techniques, practices, scope, audiences and impact.
  • Knowledge of campaign techniques, strategies and practices.
