International Representative for Indonesia
Protection International is seeking to recruit a representative for its work in Indonesia.
Protection International (PI) is an
international non-profit organization that is registered in Indonesia as
Yayasan Perlindungan Insani Indonesia. PI is researching strategies and
security management tools that protect human rights defenders (HRD). And it
shares its expertise in this area with people at risk for their human rights
work all around the world, including Indonesia. PI sees human rights defenders
as agents of change who form a pillar of free and just societies. In many parts
of the world, HRD face threats from state and non-state actors for their human
rights work. PI works with human rights defenders to develop strategies
tailored to their profile and context. PI's work in Indonesia in the coming
years will be oriented towards, but not limited to, those defending human
rights in context of exploitation of natural resources.
The role
The PI Representative is
responsible for PI’s work in Indonesia. The PI Representative heads up a team
of four in Jakarta, and reports to the Programme Director at Protection
International in Brussels. (S)he travels regularly in the country and occasionally
in the region and to Europe.
Main responsibilities
- Responsible for crafting the strategic plans for our work and presence, implementation of the corresponding work plans and the application of PI policies to the work in Indonesia. Our work is geared towards change for the protection of HRD through a variety of activities: research, capacity building, advocacy, and outreach. The responsibilities also extend to finance management and fundraising.
- Develop and manage PI’s position in Indonesia
- Develop and manage the position of the Indonesian entity within Protection International, accompany a process of gradual decentralisation
- Contribute to PI’s internal learning, exchange and knowledge-sharing
- Bring the best out of the team (staffing, development, performance management)
- Realise a progressively solid funding base for PI’s presence in Indonesia
- Manage and account for finances of PI’s operations in Indonesia
- Represent PI towards stakeholders (local and international civil society, national and international authorities, donors) and develop strategic collaboration and partnerships
- Account for PI’s work in Indonesia to PI’s governance structure (regular financial and narrative reporting)
Skills, competences &
experience
- University degree in law, human rights, political science, social sciences or related field
- 5 years of experience in human rights work, 3 years of experience in team management
- Ability to develop a clear vision for the improvement of civil society space in Indonesia, of the protection of HRD in particular
- Ability to work independently, highly self-motivated, ability to handle pressure and work in a sensitive environment
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, representational and negotiation skills
- Experience in human rights work in Asia
- Experience in project management (including financial dimension)
- Excellent analytical skills; proven research skills are an asset
- Experience as coach/trainer is an asset
- A good fundraising record is an asset
- Proven ability to bring the best out of a team
- Excellent spoken and written English and Indonesian; French and Spanish language skills are an asset
- High level of computer literacy
- Available for travel and flexible working hours
The offer
One-year contract with
six month probation period with the perspective of renewal. Competitive salary
and benefits conform Indonesian labour standards and regulations.
