The Nature Conservancy Indonesia Job Vacancy: Oil Palm Program Manager, Samarinda

The Nature Conservancy is a conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people.

Currently we are searching for qualified candidates to fill the following position:

OIL PALM PROGRAM MANAGER

The Oil Palm Program Manager leads, manages, and implements all aspects of TNC’s oil palm program in Indonesia.  S/he is a member of Indonesia Terrestrial Program Senior Manager Team (SMT) and is accountable for oil palm related outcomes under the direction of the Terrestrial Program Director. Together with other ITP senior managers, s/he establishes overall oil palm strategic priorities for ITP, develops oil palm strategies, and influences policies that will achieve the goals and objectives described in the ITP Conservation Business Plan and BMUB ICI-funded project. S/he will work with different team members within the Indonesia Terrestrial Program, and the different units within the Indonesia country program (External Affairs, Marketing and Communication, etc.), in advancing the land conservation goals of the program in Indonesia.

S/he will work with various partners, particularly GIZ and CPI, manage contracts, monitor progress, and report to donor agency.  S/he serves as the principle contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and academic community on issues related to oil palm. S/he will play a leading role in donor identification, cultivation and stewardship for the program.  S/he disseminates best practices, provides training and analyses to best implement organizational measures of success. While a substantial portion of the program will be focused on Berau and East Kalimantan, the program will also be involved with lesson sharing and policy dialogue at the national level. S/he will play an important role in designing and implementing TNC’s emerging global agriculture strategy.

This may include one or more of the following functions:
  • Establishes the Conservancy as an influential organization on issues related to sustainable oil palm in Indonesia 
  • Identifies and promotes priorities and strategic issues in his/her area of responsibility in collaboration with Terrestrial Program Director and other ITP SMT members
  • Develops and implements cutting edge oil palm strategies to help transform TNC Indonesia Program conservation policy, practice and outcomes 
  • Leads and manages team which supports and improves conservation efforts
  • Builds strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field
  • Develops key partnerships with public & private organizations in order to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices
  • Engages local community support for local conservation efforts
  • Negotiates complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve and protect natural communities 
  • Promotes TNC oil palm work at the national and international levels
  • Leads or supports fundraising initiatives from private (companies) and public sources to support ITP oil palm work in Indonesia
  • Sets key performance indicators on annual basis based on program goals and objectives, in consultation with Terrestrial Program Director and key SMT members, to guide oil palm initiatives
The Oil Palm Program Manager will be based in Jakarta office with frequent travel to Samarinda, Berau, and other areas.  S/he reports to the Terrestrial Program Director.

Requirements:
  • BA/BS degree and 10-12 years’ experience in conservation practice, oil palm sector, or equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • Knowledge of oil palm sector, partnership schemes in oil palm, RSPO, ISPO standards, HCV assessment and management. 
  • Knowledge of climate change issues, especially REDD+ policy dialogue globally and in Indonesia
  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans at the national level 
  • Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes
  • Motivating team members, setting goals and leading efforts 
  • Delivering practical, adaptable products and services to customers
  • Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental affairs 
  • Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages
  • Successful experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects
  • Demonstrated success as a manager who has successfully motivated staff to achieve and sustain excellence 
  • Demonstrated leadership and able to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization 
  • Successful experience in partnership development (partners, community, government, etc.) including extensive networking with high-level conservation contacts; political savvy 
  • Proven interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills
