Maluku
Mercy Corps Indonesia is currently
implementing the second phase of its Spice Up the Deal (SUD) program in Maluku,
which was launched in November 2013 and will end on 31 October 2015. SUD
applies a Making Markets Work for the
Poor (M4P) approach to developing the Maluku spice market. SUD Phase
II is
a two-year program designed to scale up the impact of SUD Phase I,
continuing
to foster systemic changes to develop equitable nutmeg and clove markets
in Indonesia ’s Maluku Province .
The program works with farmers, traders, and other key actors involved
in the
production, processing, trade and export of nutmeg and clove on the
islands of Ambon and Seram. The goal of the program is to improve
the ability of the spices value chain to benefit poor farmers and
increase
their income through increased production, improvements in quality, and
fostering ‘win-win’ business relationships between farmer groups and
buyers. To
achieve this goal the program supports the establishment and capacity
building
