Expert
Sustainable Land Use Planning
Based in Jakarta
SNV Netherlands Development Organisation
SNV is a not-for-profit international
development organisation. Founded in the Netherlands nearly 50 years ago, we
have built a long-term, local presence in 38 of the poorest countries in Asia,
Africa and Latin America. Our global team of local and international advisors
work with local partners to equip communities, businesses and organizations
with the tools, knowledge and connections they need to increase their incomes
and gain access to basic services – empowering them to break the cycle of
poverty and guide their own development
By sharing our specialist expertise in our
four focal sectors: Agriculture, Renewable Energy, Water, Sanitation &
Hygiene and Commodities and Climate Change we contribute to solving some of the
leading problems facing the world today – helping to find local solutions to
global challenges and sowing the seeds of lasting change. To specifically
address the issues related to sustainability, SNV Indonesia has established a
Commodities and Climate Change program.
The program is designed to advance
understanding of the interface between agriculture and energy use across
different forest landscapes in order to support low emission, pro-poor
development pathways. By developing knowledge across the landscape the Program
is developing knowledge products and implementing activities in conjunction
with governments, businesses and local communities across the landscape to
support sustainable development.
In order to develop an integrated vision for
sustainable development for a region, SNV has developed a Siting Tool, based on
the work of the Responsible Cultivation Areas programme (Ecofys, 2010) and Smit
et al. (2013)). The tool helps visualizing options for sustainable agricultural
expansion through a 'Risk Indicator Map', which is useful in zoning a landscape
and informing decision makers on areas where development should be promoted as
well as areas that should be maintained. The tool works by using sustainability
standards to prioritize areas suitable for sustainable expansion. The tool has
been tested in West Kalimantan, Lampung, Jambi and North Sumatra for coffee,
rubber, cocoa and oil palm and is used for identifying promising project sites
for the program,. Currently SNV is working on a revision of the tool, integrating
the impact of climate change on biophysical suitability (using MaxEnt),
distance to infrastructure as well as calculating the impacts on the (local)
economy (potentially using models like INVEST or MARXAN).
