The World Agroforestry Centre (also
known as the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry or ICRAF) is an
independent research institution which generates science-based knowledge about
the complex role trees play in agricultural landscapes and rural livelihoods.
As part of the Centre’s work to bring tree-based solutions to bear on poverty
and environmental problems, researchers – working in close collaboration with
partners – are developing new technologies, tools and policy recommendations
for increased food security and ecosystem health.
The Centre’s headquarters are located
in Nairobi, Kenya, and research is conducted in 34 countries in Africa, Asia
and Latin America. We are supported by the Consultative Group on International
Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and receive funding from over 50 different
donors.

About the position
The LUWES
Communications Officer will work with three projects that use the land-use
planning for low-emissions development (LUWES) methodology, through preparing
and supporting clear and effective communications between scientist; farmers;
environmental and forestry extension workers; district and provincial
governments and other projects in Papua, South Sumatra, East Kalimantan, East
Java and other areas; partner organizations such as NGOs and educational
institutions; other projects; and the media.
Under the joint supervision of the coordinator of
those projects (Project Coordinator) and the Regional
Communications Specialist, the
LUWES Communications Officer will support a team of scientists in developing and implementing
a communications
strategy. She/he will also work closely with relevant
stakeholders and will report to the Project Coordinator and Regional Communications Specialist on a regular basis. The position will specifically
support three major projects:
- ParCimon: Participatory monitoring by civil society of land-use planning for low-emissions development strategies (funded by the European Union);
- LAMA-I: Locally appropriate mitigation actions in Indonesia (funded by the Danish International Development Agency); and
- GE-LAMA: Green economy and locally appropriate mitigation actions in Indonesia (funded by Bundesumweltministeriums (BMU/German Federal Environment Ministry).
Duties and Responsibilities:
In close liaison with the Project Coordinator and
the Research Communications Specialist in Bogor, West Java, establish a
communications plan, which will include:
- Developing and implementing internal and external LUWES information systems and productii.
- Identifying extension (advisory) and other information needs for the range of LUWES stakeholders;
- Supporting development of publications and their dissemination, including corporate communications products—e.g. content for public awareness or for partners and networking—in various forms, such as print, digital, audio visual, in close collaboration with the Information Unit;writing, rewriting, editing material in English and Indonesian (in collaboration with scientific staff and other writers and editors as necessary);
- Maintaining the ParCiMon, LAMA-I and GE-LAMA web pages regularly;
- Monitoring the implementation of the communications strategy and assisting in evaluating it at the end of the project; and
- Other related tasks assigned by the Project Coordinator.

Requirements
- Bachelor degree in communications, media, literature, social sciences, environment, forestry, agriculture, agroforestry or related discipline.
- At least five years of relevant experience, preferably on ecosystem services and payment for ecosystem services, natural resource management and/or rural development.

- Self-directed; well organized; able to meet deadlines
- Able to manage a range of professional contractors to tight deadlines
- Excellent command of written and spoken English and Indonesian
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well in multicultural teams
- Able to generate creative, practical approaches to overcome challenging situations
- Proven negotiation skills, writing and documentation competencies
- Willingness to undertake frequent travel both national and international (passport)
- Familiarity with one or more local languages of project locations (desirable but not essential)
