Purpose:
Reality Check Approach +’ is a project funded by DFAT through the Poverty Reduction Support Facility. Reality Check (RCA) + has been set up to expand the capacity of local Indonesian research organisations to undertake high quality RCA studies. The project will conduct 2-3 studies over the course of 9 months with local organizations and support local government and development partners to use the findings to inform local programs and policies.
The Reality Check Approach (RCA) is a powerful cross-sectoral research approach for improving the connection between pro-poor policies, programmes and the lives of people that such policies are supposed to improve. Since it’s development and piloting by The Swedish Embassy in Dhaka in 2007, the RCA has gained international recognition; was presented at the ‘3rd High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness’ in Accra and has been widely lauded by Donors and researchers as an exciting complement to traditional M&E approaches.
The 'Reality' in Reality Check refers to the realities of people living in poverty. The 'check' does not refer to an evaluation of them nor a set of formal research findings but rather to a means of providing up to date detail on how policies and programme strategies are felt in reality. As part of the RCA, trained qualitative researchers spend several days living in homes in local communities to listen and observe, in order to understand their perspectives and experiences.
Key Responsibilities:
The RCA-RIM will be a member of a core team comprising two RIM, a communications expert and a technical team leader, supported by project management and administration.
He/she will be expected to contribute to the design of the programme and will take on special responsibility to mentor one research organisation.
The role will report directly to the RCA Technical Director with the following reporting requirements:

The RCA-RIM will be a member of a core team comprising two RIM, a communications expert and a technical team leader, supported by project management and administration.
He/she will be expected to contribute to the design of the programme and will take on special responsibility to mentor one research organisation.
- Identify interested and capable research organisations to undertake a mentored process to develop RCA capacity and expertise.
- Provide ongoing support to build interest in and capacity for high quality Reality Check Approach studies through promotional, training and long term mentoring support to research organisations and researchers
- The core team will be responsible to implement 2-3 Reality Check Approach studies commissioned by PRSF during the project period. One will be undertaken by the core team and will trial inclusion of additional and complementary approaches to enhance the RCA. Others will be undertaken by the selected research organisations and will be closely mentored, quality assured ‘learning by doing’ studies. The Core team will provide support for design, field activities, data analysis, report writing and communication of findings from all three studies.
- Work as part of the core team to develop training and resource materials, monitoring and performance assessment processes, quality assurance procedures and communication strategies and materials
- Undertake monitoring and evaluation activities to assess the progress of the Research organisation and individual researchers.
- Work with local government actors, study commissioners and other policy makers to use the findings of the Reality Check+ for evidence-based decision-making
- Participate in annual qualitative methods symposium and Reality Check+ dissemination meetings. Attend conference and workshops in Indonesia and SE Asia to present on the Reality Check Approach in Indonesia
- Support the development of the international RCA network including participating in blog posts and webinars.
The role will report directly to the RCA Technical Director with the following reporting requirements:
- Attendance at all weekly team meetings;
- Regular updates with line manager;
- Any other reporting request as requested by your line manager.
- Master’s degree in international development, social science, anthropology or other related field
- Demonstrated experience of qualitative methods research, preferably in different sectors
- Training and mentoring experience. Demonstrated communication and facilitation skills.
- Preferably, experience with working with government at Ministerial and local level.
- Fluent in Bahasa Indonesian and have strong spoken and written English skills.
