Yayasan Masyarakat dan Perikanan Indonesia Vacancy: Community Development Officer, Bali

MDPI is a local Indonesian Yayasan based in Denpasar Bali which aims to support the sustainability of Indonesian fisheries, specifically tuna fisheries. Additionally the organization strives to ensure that the communities which are reliant on these fisheries are also developed and supported with an aim to creating a consistent and prosperous future for them. Activities towards sustainability include data collection programs, community engagement, development of co-management initiatives and implementation of activities towards Fisheries Improvement Programs (FIPs). With regard to community development activities focus on awareness programs, alternative livelihood developments and general community improvements.

The Community Engagement Officer main tasks are:
  • Community engagement: community mapping and problem area identification, community development activities, fishermen group formation
  • Community awareness and outreach: this is related specifically to fisheries related stakeholders, namely; government, fishers, buyers, processors on various topics related to sustainability, MDPI program, quality etc.

1. Responsibilities:

The Community Engagement Officer will act as an outreach figure among various sites.
  • To ensure delivery of MDPI community engagement processes
  • To act as lead facilitator for a variety of commissioned community engagement processes (i.e. leading interactions with fishermen/government, developing relationships with fishermen/government, addressing the needs of those communities and ensuring that all within the group are able to meaningfully contribute and share their knowledge and opinion within this interaction)
  • To design engaging, inclusive participatory activities and events which allow fishing community members voices and opinions to be heard, plans of action to develop and participants to feel valued, challenged, unthreatened and empowered. 
  • To design and lead training activities on different elements of community engagement (e.g. sustainability of fisheries topics, fisheries management, fairtrade, FIPs etc.)
  • To identify, work with and advise local project partners on the design and implementation of joint participatory projects 
  • To build relationships with organisations and key individuals as part of the public engagement process (e.g. RT/RW, local government officers, voluntary sector)
  • To advice MDPI Program management on how to develop and design new innovative projects and approaches to community engagement
  • To develop relationships with key agencies that may be interested in funding community engagement work (e.g. PNPM Mandiri, MMAF community grant, KKL Universities)
  • To work with the MDPI Program management to identify, design and facilitate community engagement activities and to ensure that Fishing and Living Program staffs are briefed on community engagement issues.
  • To work closely with the MDPI Data Collection Senior Supervisor and Technical Staffs to ensure that community engagement projects are delivered on site in an effective and efficient manner.
  • To monitor and evaluate community engagement processes
  • To submit regular updates and publicity materials on community engagement activities to ensure that where appropriate community engagement processes are publicised in the media. 
  • To submit regular reporting on activity progress and updates to FLP management.  
  • Other tasks assigned by Program Director related to FIP implementation
