world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and
people.
Currently we are searching for a qualified candidate to fill the position of:
Community Senior Manager
The Community Senior Manager leads, manages and implements the community-related initiatives of TNC Indonesia Terrestrial
Program (ITP) in different forest use allocations, i.e. conservation forests, production forests, and non-forest areas.
S/he is a member of ITP Senior Manager Team (SMT) and is
accountable for terrestrial’s community or social outcomes in priority
areas in Indonesia under the direction of the Terrestrial Program
Director.
S/he provides strategic leadership and support for the
Conservancy’s conservation and community engagement work. Together with
other ITP senior managers, s/he establishes overall community engagement
priorities for ITP, develops community strategies,
and influences policies that will achieve the goals and objectives
described in the ITP Conservation Business Plan. The Community Senior
Manager serves as the principle contact to government agencies, other
conservation organizations, civil society organizations,
foundations and the academic community at national level with regards
to ITP community work.
S/he plays a leading role in donor identification, cultivation,
and stewardship for the program; disseminates best practices; supports
training and analysis to best implement organizational measures of
success; and develops partnerships.
Responsibilities include:
- Establishes the Conservancy as a reputable organization in community REDD+, social forestry, and community natural resource management.
- Identifies and promotes priorities and strategic issues in his/her area of responsibility in collaboration with Terrestrial Program Director and other ITP SMT members.
- Identifies and develops mechanisms to replicate ITP Community Engagement Framework across Indonesia, such as through PNPM, FREDDI, TFCA, etc.
- Develops and implements cutting edge community strategies to help transform TNC Indonesia Program conservation policy, practice and outcomes.
- Develops innovative scientific methods, tools, and frameworks in collaboration with team members and other social scientists.
- Enhances the existing social monitoring and human well-being assessment framework and coordinates their implementation to assess progress and the impacts of our work in Berau and East Kutai.
- Strengthens and designs the science elements of the community work, provides strategic directions for future social research in TNC sites (conducted by TNC and other organizations), coordinates data analysis and extraction of lessons learned, in collaboration with relevant scientists in Central Science and Forest & Climate Team.
- Promotes TNC community work to the scientific communities at the national and international levels.
- Promotes TNC community work to policy-makers and influences policy-making and decision-making processes that would promote community forest tenure, livelihood, and empowerment.
- Manages the Conservancy’s community projects, manages contracts, monitors progress, and puts together reports to donor agencies.
- Provides quality control/assurance to different teams that engage community in their work.
- Builds strategic, scientific and technical capacity in the field within ITP.
- Develops key partnerships with public, private and civil society to identify and resolve community issues and widely communicate solutions and best practices at the country and international levels.
- Produces or contributes to the production of at least 4 publications per year, in the forms of journal articles, book chapters, workshop papers, newspaper or magazine articles, etc., which utilizes the collected data and lessons learnt from TNC work.
- Leads or supports fundraising initiatives from private (companies) and public sources to support ITP community work in Indonesia.
- Sets key performance indicators on annual basis based on program goals and objectives, in consultation with Terrestrial Program Director and key SMT members, to guide community initiatives and programs.
Specific deliverables include:
- Mechanisms to replicate ITP Community Engagement Framework across Indonesia, such as through PNPM, FREDDI, TFCA, etc. are developed through close coordination and alignment with relevant institutions.
- Hutan Desa decree for Merabu is obtained.
- At least 4 publications per year, in the forms of journal articles, book chapters, workshop papers, newspaper or magazine articles, etc., which utilizes the collected data and lessons learnt from TNC work.
- At least 2 proposals are prepared and submitted to relevant donor agencies.
- The position of communities in BFCP governance structure or mechanism of channeling the voice of communities (Community Learning Circle) to SC BFCP is in place and operationalized.
- A high-level roadmap for implementing social and environmental safeguards in BFCP over the next 5 years.
- Regular monitoring and evaluation of the impacts of our community work is conducted.
- Toolkit of methods and approaches for implementing the BFCP community engagement framework applied in at least five village communities, 2 TNC model villages and at least 3 NGO-led replication villages.
- Performance-based incentive agreements are in place with 2 model and 3 replication villages.
The Community Senior Manager reports to the Terrestrial Program Director and is based in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Basic Qualifications:
- BA/BS degree in Community/Social Forestry, Social Science, or Anthropology or related field, with 10 years of experience in community-based natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrated experience in building the capacity of project teams and partners to ensure sustainability of conservation initiatives
- Experience with certain aspects of fundraising: identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation
- Experience designing, implementing, and directing complex or multiple projects of strategic importance, including managing finances, supervising multidisciplinary professionals and coordinating the work of partners
- Experience working with current trends, practices, and methods in community based forest management globally, Asia Pacific region, and Indonesia in particular
- Experience in developing partnerships with communities, non-government and government agencies
- Experience conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives
- Proven Indonesian and English written and verbal communications skills
Requirements:
- 10-12 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of current Community REDD+ and community forestry trends and practices globally, specifically in Indonesia
- Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes and social objectives
- Demonstrated experience in fundraising of public and private sources
- Successful experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects
- Knowledge of methods and standards of community based forest management, and experience in conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives
- Motivating team members, setting goals, and leading efforts
- Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in Indonesian and English languages
- Successful experience in partnership development (partners, community, government, etc.) including extensive networking with high-level conservation contacts; political savvy
- Proven interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills
