Free Press Unlimited is currently seeking to hire a Digital Security Trainer based in Asia.

Objective of the assignment
The Digital Security Trainer will be the co-trainer on the Money Trail programme for which Free Press Unlimited organises a 2-day course aiming to advise participants on all digital security matters and ensure that the data and security needs of investigative journalists are met. The journalists selected for this training are working on uncovering illicit finance, corruption, tax evasion, etc. They will be trained in securing not only the actors in their investigations, but also the investigation itself. The training focuses on improving participants’ individual as well as organizational risk assessment and security skills.

The training for Asian investigative journalists is planned for 30 March – 3 April 2020. The regional digital Security co-trainer will use the existing curriculum that has been developed for the Money Trail programme, and works in coordination with and under supervision of a lead-trainer. In the training 30 investigative journalists will participate. The curriculum is highly interactive and adopts an experiential learning approach. The focus is on raising security awareness through:
  1. The practice of risk assessment as a methodology to properly identify mitigating tools,
  2. Building a consensus around fundamental concepts, namely privacy and anonymity,
  3. Demystifying technology underlying defensive tools, namely encryption and password management, and
  4. Addressing misconceptions regarding the limits of popular tools such as Tor and VPN.
Key responsibilities
  1. Cooperate with lead-trainer on contextualising the curriculum for Asian participants;
  2. Jointly prepare and provide the 2-day training to 30 participants;
  3. Train investigative journalists in the field of (digital) security using the available curriculum;
  4. Advise on all digital security matters and mitigation measures;
  5. Liaise between participants and FPU;
  6. Find ready-made and sustainable solutions to possible (digital) security problems;
  7. Troubleshoot digital security issues that journalists are facing.
Who you are
You are a professional, enthusiastic and driven individual with:
  1. University degree in ICT or related field;
  2. At least 3 years work experience in (digital) security matters;
  3. Thorough understanding of digital security, including digital security risk assessment methods, encryption methods, secure communication methods, operational/travel (digital) security practices, device hygiene methodologies, and mobile security;
  4. Established record in (digital) security consultancy and training with journalists and/or NGOs, or willingness to learn about investigative journalists workflows and processes;
  5. Familiar with the different digital security threats that Asian journalists face in their home countries;
  6. Ability to work with a pre-defined training curriculum, and to facilitate workshops / co-working sessions;
  7. Excellent communications skills;
  8. Ability to speak and write English fluently (essential);
  9. Excellent work ethics;
  10. Reliable team player;
  11. Residing in Asia and ability / willingness to travel to training location in Jakarta, Indonesia.
