Raja Ampat Marine Project
FFI’s marine work in Raja Ampat started in 2016 as part of FFI’s wider Ridge to Reef Program in the Raja Ampat archipelago. Our marine work focusses primarily on community-based marine conservation on the northern coast of Misool Island, seeking to conserve globally threatened marine species including dugongs and sea turtles. This work is done in close collaboration with indigenous communities, who we are supporting to gain legal recognition of their fishing rights and engage with eco-tourism livelihood opportunities. The wider Ridge-to-Reef approach in the Raja Ampat archipelago aims to reduce land-based impacts on marine ecosystems through community-based forest conservation, collaborative protected area management, community-based sustainable tourism development, and ‘green’ spatial planning interventions.

MAROS-PANGKEP CONSERVATION PROJECT
FFI-IP will carry out projects in Maros Regency and Pangkajene-Kepulauan Regency (Pangkep), South Sulawesi, with the name of the activity "Long-Term Protection of the Maros-Pangkep Karst Landscape in South Sulawesi". This activity was funded by Halcyon Land & Sea with implementation time between October 2019 and October 2020. The long-term project goal is effective karst biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in the Maros - Pangkep Biosphere Reserve.

The immediate project aim is to protect the Karst landscape trough legal designation of the Maros - Pangkep KBA by the end of 2021 as critical ecosystem area (Kawasan Ekosistem Esensial/ KEE), as well as through international designation as UNESCO biosphere reserve, and to demonstrate responsible tourism and agricultural practices to reduce the threats to karst biodiversity.
