About Water.org
Water.org, a U.S.-based non-governmental organization working to increase access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Water.org has been in operation since 1990, implementing sustainable and scalable water and sanitation programs in conjunction with local NGOs and financial institutions. Water.org has pioneered its WaterCredit initiative over the last several years, which works by building the capacity of carefully selected local financial institutions to offer affordable financing for water and sanitation facilities. WaterCredit programs support financial institutions through a combination of financial assistance and technical support. Since 2003, Water.org has implemented WaterCredit programs with 66 partner financial institutions, facilitating 938,000 water and sanitation loans totaling over $176 million.

Water.org launched operations in Indonesia in early 2014 and provides financial and technical assistance to microfinance institutions (MFIs) to launch and scale water and sanitation loan products. Water.org partner MFIs design, pilot and launch loan products for financing the construction of household-level water/sanitation facilities such as toilets, septic tanks, wells, and piped water connections.

Position Description
Working with US and Jakarta-based team members, the WASH Promotion and Triggering Consultant will develop and build knowledge and skills among Water.org partner network in Indonesia. S/he will play a critical role in developing appropriate WASH promotion strategies for MFI partners to market WASH loan product.  In addition, the messages are targeted to low-income communities who lack awareness to the benefits of safe water and sanitation access.

The consultant needs to be a highly-resourceful individual, possess great communication, research and analytical skills, and be creatively strong in community development.

The WASH Promotion and Triggering Consultant will work with Water.org team to perform the following tasks:

Develop Multiple WASH Promotion Samples
  • Collaborate with Water.org team and partner teams to understand learning needs
  • Design and produce a suite of WASH Promotion methods/materials aimed to low-income communities across Indonesia to convince obtaining safe water and sanitation facilities, with various considerations:
    • Short vs. long delivery duration
    • Door-to-door marketing vs. wider audience delivery channels
    • Water access vs. sanitation access
    • Tools needed to deliver the message (video, photos, miniature/figures, map, etc.)
    • Script for TOT to MFI field staffs
Capacity Building to MFI Partners
  • Train Partner and Water.org program staff in the effective WASH promotion and Triggering (Training of Trainers sessions)
  • Facilitate additional capacity development training sessions or small-group events for partners across multiple locations across Java
Professional Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in international development, finance, training, or other relevant majors
  • Five years of relevant professional experience as a practitioner in water and sanitation, sanitation marketing, CLTS, STBM, or other relevant sector
  • Project management experience and entrepreneurial mindset
  • Prior experience delivering successful WASH promotion ToT sessions
  • Familiarity with microfinance marketing operations is preferred
  • Proficiency in Bahasa & English is preferred

Compensation Offered
Please note that the consulting offer made to the selected candidate shall be commensurate with qualifications and experience.  This engagement is expected to complete deliverables in 3 months, with no possibility of cost extension.  This position does not offer full-time benefits. The Consultant shall be responsible for payment of all taxes.
