Communications Officer (Indonesia)

The medical humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is looking for a passionate and talented individual in Indonesia with a strong desire to work in an international NGO as a Communications Officer.

Reporting to the Senior Communications Officer, this position is responsible planning and managing public communications activities in Indonesia to raise visibility and acceptance of MSF in the country via media and targeted groups among the general public, in conjunction with the overall MSF communications strategy.

Principal Accountability
  • Contribute in the formulation of MSF public communications strategies in Indonesia, in coherence with the overall communications strategy of MSF, taking into account different communications needs, language as well as culture.
  • Plan and organized public communication activities in Indonesia for MSF visibility, acceptance building, and in support to representation and advocacy in the country 
  • Build up concrete contact and network with key local, national, and international media representatives in the country
  • Produce communications materials in a timely and accurate manner and dispense it to targeted audiences in Indonesia
  • Promote public events and/or other visibility activities of MSF in the country
  • Support the communication need of other MSF institutional activities in Indonesia, i.e. representation, advocacy, operational support unit, field recruitment
  • In coordination and agreement with SCO, support communications activities of MSF operations in the country in collaboration with operational centres
Main Duties and Responsibilities 

General
  • Contribute to the development of public communications strategies of MSF for Indonesia
  • Monitoring and providing analysis of government, political environment, think tanks, pressure groups, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other bodies in order for MSF to be kept informed of any developments related to current landscape relating to humanitarian or foreign non-profit organisations
  • Identify community groups, commentators, opinion makers, think tanks, and relevant influencers  that MSF could tap for its institutional and public communications objectives in the country
Media
  • Pitch media for regular coverage of MSF’s work and worldwide humanitarian crises
  • Response to media requests for coverage of MSF’s work and worldwide humanitarian emergencies
  • Identify media columns to secure regular media coverage
  • Initiate media briefings and prepare press dossiers, and where possible organize press conferences 
  • Identify, contact, sensibilize, and mobilize local, national, and international media in Indonesia, especially media with national influence 
  • Analyze opinions and commentaries related to MSF topics or to political and humanitarian environment 
  • Evaluate the impact of communications work on a regular basis 
  • Organise media visits from Indonesia to the field 
  • Produce communications materials for media and MSF use 
  • Manage the translation of primarily the press releases in Bahasa Indonesia or vice-versa 
  • Monitor media/online reports and proactively contact media counterparts to correct misquote message of MSF and/or wrong information of the organisation 
  • Build up concrete communications support network, including with MSF-Hong Kong associates or returned field workers, office volunteers and PR/advertising agencies 
Online Public Communications 
  • Pitch online media about MSF’s worldwide activities 
  • Establish connection with key online influencers who have interest to MSF’s work, in coordination with the Digital Communications Officer and Digital Strategist in MSF-Hong Kong 
Publications 
  • Support in the production of communication driven publications including the production of bi-annual Bulletin, MSF activity report, general information leaflets about MSF targeted for Indonesia. 
  • Plan for and organize the distribution of the MSF publications to MSF supporters and targeted segments in the country 
  • Support other departments in the production of MSF-Hong Kong publications 
Public Awareness 
  • Promote public events and other visibility activities in Indonesia 
  • Responsible in developing content for public events and awareness raising activities 
  • Coordinate talks, presentations, debates, workshops, and public speeches to raise the profile of MSF and awareness of humanitarian issues  
Others 
  • Support the communications needs of other departments, i.e. recruitment and networking activities
  • Provide communications support to board members and ASEAN representative, Operational Support Unit when necessary and if available 
  • Circulate relevant MSF information on a regular basis among all staff in the MSF office
  • Provide necessary communications support to MSF operations and needs in the region 
  • Conduct communication briefing and debriefing with field workers
  • Properly document the experiences learnt by MSF public communications in the country 
The Ideal Candidate
  • Minimum 3 years’ journalistic or public relations experience 
  • Strong interest and knowledge in world affairs 
  • Good knowledge of local, regional, and international media in Indonesia 
  • Experience working with NGO/INGO is desirable
  • Experience in organizing events is an asset 
  • Commitment to the aims and values of Medecins Sans Frontieres 
  • Ability to work independently but also a good team player 
  • Fluency in both spoken and written English and Bahasa Indonesia is a must 
  • Good presentation and solid experience in translation and copy writing 
  • Ability to work under pressure and to respect deadlines 
  • Flexible and willing to travel
