The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) is a nonprofit, global research organization dedicated to advancing human well-being, environmental conservation and equity.
We conduct research that enables more informed and equitable decision making about the use and management of tropical and sub-tropical forest landscapes. We help policy makers and practitioners shape effective policy, improve the management of tropical forests and address the needs and perspectives of people who depend on forests for their livelihoods. Our multidisciplinary approach considers the underlying drivers of deforestation and degradation which often lie outside the forestry sector: forces such as agriculture, infrastructure development, trade and investment policies and law enforcement.
CIFOR is looking for:
Scientist, Sustainable Investments and Value Chains
Overview
The primary responsibility of the Scientist is to contribute to the development and implementation of a vigorous and globally relevant research agenda focused on examining the effectiveness of public and private governance arrangements, supply chain interventions, and business and investment models for sustainable supply of commodities and smallholders’ livelihoods. Efforts should be dedicated to comparing the social and environmental outcomes across different interventions (e.g. zero deforestation, certification standards, moratoria, fire-free villages), and the potential to promoting uptake or scaling them up to transition more effectively to low-carbon agricultural development with greater social inclusion and equity, under options that enhance social and women empowerment. These efforts will contribute to promoting investments that safeguard the rights of local populations, including marginalized groups such as smallholders, women and indigenous people.

- Evaluating the performance of public and private arrangements and interventions in the supply chains, finance systems, investment models, and partnerships to promote sustainable supply of commodities and inclusive business models, and identify options to improve their effectiveness.
- Assessing the differential outcomes and trade-offs from agricultural and forestry investments under different business models identifying their potential to create shared value and deliver improved social, economic and environmental benefits, with explicit gender considerations.
- Identifying and examining the potential of emerging innovative approaches, strategies and systems for supporting achievement of private sector commitments to sustainability, including hybrid governance systems, improvements in certification systems, and jurisdictional approaches.
