Zoological Society of London Vacancy: Communication and Outreach Advisor - Palembang, South Sumatra

The Zoological Society of London is an international wildlife conservation organization with a focus on science-based and pragmatic solutions. ZSL has been active in Indonesia for about 10 years, with a particular focus on the overlap between industrial development and biodiversity conservation. ZSL’s Indonesia is based in Bogor, West Java, with existing field projects in Jambi and South Sumatera.

We are now looking for: 

Communication and Outreach Advisor 

Terms and Condition
Start Date : March, 2016
Duration of Contract : One year fix- term Contract, with potential to extend
Work Area : This post is office based in ZSL’s office in Palembang, South Sumatra. However, travel to field sites and other ZSL offices will be required
Hours of Work : Monday to Friday from 09.00 am up to 05.00 pm
Reporting to : Sumsel Project Director

Key Purpose of the Job   The Communication and Outreach Advisor will support the UKCCU Project to plan, oversee and implements activities relating to the conservation, their habitat and sustainable management practice to prevent species extinction and repair damage to ecosystems. He/she will be involved in building partnerships between government agencies, conservation groups, universities, and private landowners. 

This position oversees the UKCCU/NICFI Project in South Sumatra

The UKCCU/NICFI Project works with the Government of South Sumatra, national and district level governments, communities and the private sector to facilitate and support the government, private sector and local communities, to establish and pilot the sustainable landscape management partnership approach in the Sembilang - Dangku landscape of South Sumatra. The proposed impact of this project is to achieve “Inclusive economic growth and community prosperity, biodiversity conservation, forest protection and restoration, and the ending of deforestation, peatland drainage and wildfires that reduces land-based GHG emissions”.

Main Responsibilities
  • Work in accordance with the ZSL communications strategy and use approved templates to develop a communications strategy across multiple platforms, including print, electronic media, and social media. Other mediums may include, but are not limited to, press releases, press conferences, media interviews, site visits, professional photography, videos, webcasts and/or e-mail marketing 
  • Produce promotional material including success stories, brochures, interviews, lessons learned and other publications and facilitate their distribution to the relevant audiences;
  • Produce all required program reporting for ZSL including weekly and quarterly reports, and other documents as needed
  • Regularly update the ZSL website with new content, images in coordination with communication team at HQ London
  • Liaise with local media and public relations officers in local partner organization
  • Lead implementation of media and outreach strategies to build ZSL’s reputation and maximize the policy and development impact 
  • Act as the main focal point for ZSL’s communication and media relations
  • Draft and edit press releases in coordination with relevant project team under UKCCU in particular and ZSL Indonesia in general
  • Analyze the communications and marketing programs and adjust to increase effectiveness, particularly in the area of fundraising efforts. 
  • Plan, manage, and coordinate public relations projects and activities; develop and maintain media relationships; write, edit and oversee distribution of news releases; prepare and place media articles and features about the ZSL Indonesia 
  • Perform any other duties as required

The job requires continued professional internal and external interaction/ communications, both in person and via phone and email

Mental Demands
The position will require close attention to detail and therefore concentration on the work in hand – precision and accuracy being vital attributes.

Flexibility
The position will be relatively routine in terms of day-to-day tasks during office hours – however sometimes e.g. during field trips or when a workshop is being organized the next day, some flexibility in working hours may be required.

Person Specification
A. Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum Master Degree in Communication, Journalism or any other relevant subject. 
  • Minimum 7 years’ successful experience working in similar position with an international NGO
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and interpretative problem solving skills
  • Self-motivated and resourceful, with the proven ability to multi-task and operate successfully under tight deadlines and time pressures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong working relationship with stakeholders and the government Institutions
B. Knowledge
Knowledge and experience in production of public outreach materials and strategy

C. Skills & Abilities
  • Computer literacy (excellent IT skills); competent in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and other MS tools; 
  • Adept at using various applications including database, spreadsheet, graphics, word processing, presentation creation/editing, communicate by e-mail and use scheduling software
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite in a cross-platform environment; experience with desktop publishing/page layout/photo editing software highly desirable.
  • Good communication skills;
  • Preferably a high level of written and spoken English;
  • Flexible and able to work under pressure and often to tight deadlines; including an ability to prioritize jobs;
  • Highly motivated.
  • Willing to work at any circumstances both independently or in a group, such as in remote areas with very limited facilities.
  • Excellent in writing skills and oral communication both in Indonesian and English.
  • Able to deal with tight schedule and unscheduled tasks, and target oriented
  • Willing to travel extensively across the project sites in Indonesia
