Program Summary - Mobile Solutions for Smallholder
Farmers Assessment
Mercy
Corps Indonesia has been engaged in conversations with an agribusiness company
and multi-stakeholder partnerships to enhance agriculture development in
Southeast Asia to develop a
mobile-based approach for farmers. This requires developing a better
understanding of farmer needs and how they can be met through mobile
technology, as well as an overview of what solutions exist or need to be
created. The overall objective is to use mobile technology to enhance the
livelihoods of smallholder farmers by helping them to become more sustainable
and efficient, increase their access to markets, reduce transaction costs,
enhance the traceability of raw materials, drive loyalty and secure supply for
companies.
Given
these factors, Mercy Corps Indonesia has designed a project with the objective
of developing a proof of concept for an open source mobile platform in
Southeast Asia with applications that can meet the needs of smallholder farmers
for specific crops in specific geographies. The aim is to start with soybean
farmers in East Java, Indonesia with potential for scale-up across geographies
and crops.
