Executive Director, IWRAW ASIA PACIFIC based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The International Women's Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific (IWRAW Asia Pacific) is an international NGO based in Kuala Lumpur. We work through collaborative projects, primarily with women's organisations world-wide, to promote the domestic application of international human rights standards in relation to women's rights. For this, we utilise the CEDAW Convention and increasingly, where relevant, other human rights treaties too.

The Post and Requirements:We are looking for a woman with strong knowledge of women’s rights and a track record of working in this field. She must be a strategic thinker with organizational development and management strengths with at least 10 years of related work experience. Applicants need to possess an honours/postgraduate degree in law or social sciences with a keen interest and involvement in NGO work and women's rights.

Term of Reference of Executive Director:
  • The candidate will bring the following professional qualifications and personal attributes.
  • Must have worked in a senior leadership position for at least 5 years.
  • A demonstrated commitment and experience in advancing the human rights of women.
  • Familiarity with the UN Human Rights System and treaty bodies.
  • Successful experience in the leadership of a comparable non-profit women's organization and regional or international experience in promoting and managing a women's human rights programme is essential.
  • Capacity to plan strategically and provide oversight in respect of implementing an advocacy programme on the human rights of women.
  • Successful management experience overseeing professional level staff, enabling long term goals and through consultative processes.
  • Strong organizational, planning, implementation and monitoring skills as well as a facility for detail and follow-through; the capacity to be focused, and orderly.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English with the ability to motivate and deal with people at all levels: board members, staff, NGOs, Government and donor.
  • Successful fundraising experience
  • Have experience in overseeing the financial management of the organization and providing guidance to a finance team.
  • Must be linked to existing networks and have extensive social capital in the human rights and women’s rights field.
  • Demonstrate ability to build coalitions among diverse groups of people and form liaisons with relevant human rights and legal institutions at international and national level.
