Key Purpose of the Job
- The Monitoring & Capacity Building Project Manager will manage all aspects of the ZSL Production Landscapes project – this will include three main dimensions;
- People management – directly leading a team staff based in ZSL Indonesia’s HQ in Bogor;
- Coordination and oversight of the Production Landscapes project, in terms of strategic direction and planning;
- Professional technical advice - providing cutting edge tailored advice and guidance regarding production landscapes, HCVs, oil palm and timber plantations, agro-forestry etc. for ZSL Indonesia’s partners; corporate clients such as oil palm companies and mining concession holders, as well as Government and other NGOs.
Main Duties & Key Responsibilities
- Team management / leadership
- Directly leading a small team technical staff in all matters from their work schedules and technical competencies to their HR and training needs;
- Directly leading his/her team to engage with private sectors to undertake best management practices through a particular training on biodiversity data collection, management and monitoring;
- Provide capacity building and technical support to staff to ensure responsibilities are being carried out effectively and achieving goals;
- Provide support and oversight in preparing activity reports and assist in preparing financial reports as required by donors and/or stakeholders, in Indonesian or English, written and/or verbally.
- Professional technical advice
- Promote and further develop (as necessary) the field-based HCV Impact Monitoring System, including the implementation of ZSL’s draft field protocols and SMART system;
- Oversee the implement field-based HCV Impact Monitoring System training for palm oil, forestry and mining companies (including making presentations on the subject matter, facilitating discussion sessions, developing training modules etc.);
- Advise corporate stakeholders on regarding HCV, assessment, monitoring and management;
- Support the Global Biodiversity and Palm Oil Technical Advisor in the development and promotion of field level monitoring indicators to promote better reporting under the Transparency toolkit initiative;
- Provide technical advice as and when needed to other projects within the ZSL conservation programmes and in country partners.
- Project strategic development and planning
- Overseeing the strategic evolution of the project – strategizing with colleagues at all levels of the ZSL in-country as well as UK-based management hierarchy;
- Collaborate and support the Global Biodiversity and Palm Oil Technical Advisor in the development of new project ideas, proposals, budgets and work-plans towards securing additional funding for the project.
- Communications
- Develop and promote ZSL as a key player in the field of biodiversity and oil palm/forestry;
- Leading in reporting to and maintaining good relations with project donors and partners;
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with industry stakeholders including companies, civil society and government;
- Represent ZSL within Working Groups and other industry forums for palm oil, forestry and mining (e.g. RSPO and FSC) as and when required;
- Be proactive in meeting with company managers, developing relationships and opening up new project partnerships;
- Promote and encourage cross-ZSL information sharing, collaboration and synergy;
- Act as a ZSL representative nationally, such as by participation in relevant conservation events, workshops and symposia and in collaborations with project partners;
- Represent ZSL in dealings with national media and work with the ZSL Communications Department to ensure that the science and conservation results generated by the project are communicated to both policy makers, practitioners and the general public.
- Finance administration and Fundraising
- Working closely with the in-country Finance Coordinator/Team in monitoring project expenditure and budgets, ensuring appropriately thorough and transparent financial reporting and justification of expenditure against ZSL standard procedures (and donor criteria as required). Assist with resolution of any financial anomalies and problems;
- Regular liaison with and reporting back to Production Landscape Theme Leader in respect of all project finance issues as per the above;
- Supporting fundraising activities by assisting with the sourcing of potential donors and contributing to funding applications.
Building RelationshipsThe job requires constant internal and external interaction/communications, both in person and via phone and email - with ZSL staff colleagues in the Palembang office, and with local project partners (e.g. Government, the private sector, (I)NGOs, consultants/sub-contractors, and other relevant stakeholders) as well as with colleagues in Bogor and ZSL’s headquarters in London.
Mental DemandsThe position will require close attention to detail and therefore concentration on the work in hand, precision and accuracy being vital attributes.
FlexibilityThe position will be relatively routine in terms of day-to-day tasks during office hours – however sometimes e.g. during field trips or when a workshop is being organised the next day, some flexibility in working hours may be required.

- University degree in related discipline (or sufficient levels of relevant experience); e.g. PhD in biodiversity conservation or closely related field or an MSc with at least 6 years relevant experience.
- Strong managerial skills, ideally with experience of managing teams in the field.
- A proven history of managing complex or multiple projects including meeting strict deadlines.
- Proven fieldwork/survey experience – willingness to spend periods in the field.
- Experience of designing and implementing field research projects.
- Knowledge of production landscapes whether palm oil, logging or mining.
- Demonstrated experience of managing a field team.
- A good working knowledge of methods of data management and analysis.
- Good presentation skills; confidence and ability presenting in front of large groups of people.
- Good facilitation skills of discussion groups, workshops etc.
- Ability and experience in designing teaching modules, developing presentations etc.
- Highly motivated, pro-active and capable of working on own and taking initiative.
- Good communication skills.
