Background
United
in
Diversity (UID) is a nonprofit foundation founded in 2003 by
Universitas
Indonesia, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Sinar
Harapan with the goal
to promote engagement among the public, private and civil
society sectors and
to foster understanding and collaboration among the three
sectors of society
for the betterment of Indonesia. To further its mission, UID
together with its
partners has been coordinating and delivering learning programs
for society leaders
to increase their capacity for making relevant and innovative
interventions to
achieve Indonesia’s sustainable Develoment Goals.
UID
takes a
two-pronged approach in deploying its programs: Some engage the
three sectors
to collectively tackle issues and challenges (e.g. IDEAS and
Co-CLASS), while other
programs work with one sector or organization at a time to build
their capacity
for change and create an understanding of their role in creating
a future
reality (e.g. MALLS). But
all of them
have in common the integration of three types of knowledge: not
only the
technical knowledge (know what) and practical knowledge (know
how/action
learning), but also transformational knowledge (knowing who:
know the emerging
self).
With
the
growing global awareness for the need for sustainable changes,
and along with
the changes in Indonesia’s political climate, UID is seeing more
and more demands
for its services and more importantly growing opportunities to
make greater
impact for societal transformation.
