The British Council Job Vacancy: Press Manager, Jakarta

The British Council in Indonesia is recruiting for the post of :
Press Manager-one position-One Year/Renewable_located In Jakarta

Purpose of job:To lead the British Council’s relationships and operational work with all forms of the press and media in Indonesia and, where appropriate, in the UK.

The British Council creates international opportunities for the people of the United Kingdom and other countries. We call this cultural relations, and we believe it brings the people of the UK and other countries closer together, and helps them to understand each other better.

We have three key Strategic Business Units (SBUs)- English, the Arts, and Education and Society, through these SBUs which we engage with leaders, policy makers, influencers and opinion formers, from senior politicians through to teachers, artists and youth leaders. The British Council in Indonesia is going through a rapid expansion of it works and has ambitions; we are planning growth of approx. 30% in our total income by 2016 and we aim to reach and audience of over 15M.

Accountabilities, responsibilities and main duties:
Strategic focus:
  • Working with the Senior Marcoms Manager to deliver the press and media components of the Indonesia strategic marketing and communications plan
Press relations :
  • The post-holder needs to be an extensive network of media contacts through whom we can work to highlight key issues, messages and aspects of our work. 
  • The post-holder should organize and manage regular media gatherings as part of briefings, to help raise awareness in certain areas, to provide training or around high level visits.
  • To ensure that our network is well documented by developing and maintaining an updated British Council’s press list
  • To foster and maintain relationships with the Press community outside of our activity – through arranging informal lunches, invitations to other events etc..
  • Manage all press inquiries.
  • Manage press conferences and media luncheons, including press invitations, press releases and press kits.
  • Build close, positive relationships with editors, journalists and media representatives in Indonesia.
Strategic Business Units (SBUs) relations
  • Organize and manage regular meetings with the SBU to gather put together an annual plan of their potential requirements for press and media input and then work through updates on upcoming projects and events. 
  • To then operationalize all those plans to deliver our press and media engagement to meet all business needs.
  • To work with the Internal/External Communications Manager to ensure that British Council’s internal calendar of events reflects all press and media engagements
  • Working with SBUs to develop editorial content for articles, published editorials, press releases, press packs etc.
  • Working with SBUs and other members of the Marketing and Communications Team to provide advice and input on the best press and media for specific purposes.
  • To seize any new or imaginative opportunities through our work with the press and media that will help to further raise the profile of our work in Indonesia.
Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Working together with British Council Monitoring and Evaluation Officer on press and other media figures.
KEY RELATIONSHIPS :
  • Internal 
    • Marketing Communications Team, Senior. Marketing and Communications Manager, SBU’s Leads and teams, Country Director, Centre Managers, Regional Performance and Evaluation Manager, Director Operations, Director English Language Services, the Management Team, Regional and UK Press teams, HQ colleagues as advised by the management team.
External
  • The members of the press and other media communities in country and, where appropriate, in the region and the UK.
Other Important Features Or Requirements Of The Job
  • This position may require regular travels around Indonesia and occasional travels within the region. Evening hours and/or weekend might also be required as needed.
