ASTI is short for Animal Sanctuary Trust Indonesia, or Alam Satwa
Tatar Indonesia in Indonesian. ASTI is a non-profit organization
registered as a charity by the Indonesian Ministry of forestry.
ASTI was established to address the problem of displaced wild animals
in Indonesia, caused by habitat destruction, poaching, trafficking.
ASTI began operation in the latter part of 2008.
We take in animals confiscated by the government and those handed
over by members of the general public. We accept animals endangered
Indonesian species (mammals, birds, reptiles). Our capacity is about 70
animals, so at any one time we house about 65 animals. Since our aim is
to rehabilitate and release animals, we try to maintain a constant flow
of animals through ASTI.
The animals in our care are rehabilitated for release whenever this
is possible. Many animals are moved to other rehabilitation centers
which focus on one or two species only; the animals will receive final
rehabilitation in these centers in preparation for release. For animals
deemed to be non-releasable, ASTI provides long-term care.
