IUWASH (Indonesia Urban Water
Sanitation and Hygiene) Program is a five year program, funded by the U.S.
Agency for International Development (USAID).
IUWASH assists the Government of Indonesia in the achievement of the
Millennium Development Goals through the expansion of access to clean water and
safe sanitation services, especially those who have very limited access to both
services. Expected results under this
program are: (a) Two million people living in urban areas will have better
access to safe drinking water services, (b) 250,000 people living in urban
areas will gain better access to improved sanitation, and (c) the cost per unit
of water purchased by low income community can be reduced by at least 20%. (d)
relevant trainings are conducted for 75,000 people. To achieve the above
objectives, the technical assistance program is divided into three main
components, namely:
- Increased public awareness of the need for drinking water and proper sanitation.
- Increased service capacity (to be provided by PDAM and associated service units).
- Increased local government support (commitment, policy, governance and funding).
Description
of the Program:

6 persons / connection
then the population served by
PDAM is 70,770 people or approximately
28% of the total population
Binjai 250,252
people.
Binjai Utara Sub-district is one of the five
sub-district in Binjai
City, with a population of 71.556
people is the
current number of PDAM connections this area is 2,594 units
with the service level 21%, while
the average water consumption is only 84 liters / people /
day.
The low of water
services by PDAM in Binjai Utara Sub-district because too far about 31 km from WTP Archapada,
this area only served by deep wells in which debits decreased in every
year. To solve these
problems, PDAM propose financing
through APBN.
To support projects above, IUWASH
regional Sumatera Utara, in collaboration with Satker PK-PAM, planned to provide technical assistance by provision
of detailed engineering design (DED), as a compliance to readiness criteria and as a planning
document for the construction implementation.
This activities is supporting
