Farmer
Field School Individual Consultant
Conservation International believes that human
well-being depends on the maintenance of biodiversity and the wide range of
benefits derived from healthy, natural ecosystems. As the world’s population
surpasses seven billion and the middle class continues to expand this drives conversion
of land for agricultural production brings accelerated loss of biodiversity and
risks to the natural systems on which our food security depends. CI recognizes
that the opportunities and choices offered to farmers play a vital role in the
future of our planet.
This project, Producing More, Conserving More and
Improving Farmers’ Lives in North Sumatra, Indonesia, support the
development of a healthy sustainable society in Pakpak Bharat Regency based on
improving agricultural production, conserving biodiversity and maintaining
ecosystem services, and enhancing the livelihoods of local farmers. About 85%
of Pakpak Bharat is legally registered as forest. The region lies at a critical junction within the broader
landscape, linking protected areas to the south, such as Batang Gadis National
Park and the Batang Toru forest ecosystem, with the Leuser ecosystem in the
north, which contains the largest contiguous tracts
of natural forests remaining in Sumatra.
The project has identified farmer field school to be
an effective way to increase farmer skills and knowledge on agriculture best
practices in a way to improve agricultural productivity, and for the well-being
of local people. In this 2nd year of the project, the farmer field
