Good Return Indonesia Program Coordinator - Position Description

The role of the Good Return Indonesia Program Coordinator is to coordinate partnership activities between Good Return, Keling Kumang Credit Union (CUKK) and its sister cooperative K77. The Program Coordinator will be engaged by World Education Indonesia and seconded full-time to the Good Return program.

Good Return is an Australian based NGO and is currently implementing Phase 2 of its program in Indonesia in partnership with Solidaridad, World Education Indonesia, and Keling Kumang Credit Union (CUKK), Indonesia’s second largest credit union.

The program will:
  • Expand the network of farmers accessing agricultural and financial education training 
  • Support the development of effective and well-informed farmer Koperasi Unit Desa (KUD) cooperatives, enabling farmer groups to work together towards RSPO certification. The cooperatives will be assisted by CUKK’s new sister cooperative, K77, which has been established to support the agricultural needs of CUKK members.
Location: Based in Sintang, West Kalimantan, and working in other districts of CUKK operations to be determined in discussion with CUKK. Considerable field-based work and travel is required.

The main responsibilities of the Program Coordinator are:

  1. Coordinate activities between Good Return, CUKK and project partners (30%)
    • Liaise regularly with Good Return to ensure effective project management, stakeholder communications and common understanding of activities, expectations and plans of the program. This will include:
      • Weekly team calls with Good Return’s CUKK relationship lead (Sydney based
      • Support and communicate with Good Return technical staff as required and during visits 
      • Provide support to CUKK for ongoing capacity building activities 
  • Submit monthly project updates and submit within 5 days of the end of each month (this is a concise update on progress, issues/risks, and plans for next month), including: 
      • Performance data from CUKK training team (attendance, pre/post test scores, participant evaluations) 
    • Performance data from Good Return capacity building training activities (attendance, evaluation scores) 
    • Ensure the submission of CUKK financial acquittals on a quarterly basis 
    • Participate in quarterly and annual partnership planning discussions between GR and CUKK 
    • Support CUKK staff to upload member photos and stories, and report loan repayments on a weekly basis.
    • Liaise, as necessary, with Good Return’s partners (CUKK, K77, Solidaridad, Microsave) and provide on-site support for external consultants.
  1. Coordinate capacity building activities for palm oil farmers within CUKK (40%)
    • Lead 100 “champion” farmers from phase 1 of the program to form an independent farmer group with the goal to become RSPO (Roundtable Sustainable Palm Oil) certified within 5 years.
    • Support KUD cooperatives to collect and manage palm oil yield data
    • Develop and oversee the implementation of a farmer-level baseline survey to assess palm oil productivity trends and supply chain blockages
    • Support Solidaridad consultant(s) to map farmer palm oil produce to traders, processors, and end-users
    • Strengthen relationships between farmer groups and mills, to secure opportunities and fair prices for farmers
    • Conduct 6 capacity building workshops for K77 farmers over 16 months, commissioning external trainers as necessary
    • Develop a farmer mentoring program -  farmers from phase 1 will support new farmers joining the program in phase 2 to share knowledge, experiences and learnings
    • Coordinate the annual exchange program for K77 management and farmer representatives to attend RSPO certified cooperatives
    • Support CUKK in the application to become an RSPO Ordinary Member.
  1. Liaise with K77 management and staff to achieve the program objectives (10%)
  • Oversee K77 to produce detailed business plans for both fertilizer and solar cell products.
  • Collect monthly reports from K77 on fertilizer and solar cell sales and send to Good Return alongside the monthly program update.
  1. Client Training: Provide technical assistance to the CUKK Client Training Program and build capacity of CUKK staff to perform this role (20%)
    • Attend the weekly meetings of the CUKK training unit (financial education and farmer field school) and provide oversight and technical guidance.
    • Ensure attendance, pre/post test, evaluation data is accurately collected and reported to Good Return as part of the monthly program update.
Experience and attributes

Essential attributes:

  • A passion for community development and training
  • Knowledge of farmer field school methodology in agricultural techniques (use of fertiliser, pesticide, improving yields, environmental sustainability), preferably in palm oil
  • Experience working with farmer cooperatives to strengthen agricultural practices and access to markets (ideally in palm oil)
  • University degree or equivalent
  • Good written and spoken English language skills
  • Strong communication skills, able to communicate easily with a wide range of people
  • Be self-motivated, able to work independently
  • Available to travel and conduct field work.
Desirable attributes:

  • Experience as a non-formal education trainer, preferably in small business management and/or financial literacy in a village context
  • Understanding of Roundtable Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification process for palm oil farmers
  • Credit Union experience is desirable
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluating projects
  • Experience in agriculture, environmental awareness and/or renewable energy will be considered favourably
