GIZ Vacancy - Assistant Manager/Lead Coordinator for BRIA Project, Medan

The German Food Partnership (GFP) aims at fostering the cooperation between the German private sector and public sector institutions such as GIZ. Its objective is to promote sustainable growth in agricultural production and improved access to nutrition within the food sector in emerging and developing countries. Public and private actors join forces in order to implement comprehensive projects and programs for sustainable business in these countries. The contribution towards food and nutrition security as well as economic development in rural areas is to be measured by increased agricultural productivity and income, improved availability of food and nutrition and food self-sufficiency.

As one of the first concrete initiatives under the GFP umbrella the Better Rice Initiative Asia (BRIA) is a joint project planned and implemented by private partners in collaboration with GIZ. BRIA aims at improving rice value chains, which also includes rice-based nutrition components, in Southeast Asia (SEA), namely the four SEA countries Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. The approach also allows for covering regional cross boarder value chains. BRIA’s focus is to strengthen the nutritional and economic situation of smallholders, both consumers and rice farmers. The Project “Better Rica Initiative Asia-Indonesia” is seeking for 1 (one) qualified Indonesian candidate for the position of :

Assistant Manager/Lead Coordinator
Based in Medan
 
A.   Responsibilities
The AM/LC is responsible for:
  •  managing numbers of SRPC (Sustainable Rice Production Center) in North Sumatera
  • monitor and review progress of activities, provide recommendation for improvement of activities towards goals of project in coordination with the project manager as outlined in country concept.
  • technical management of experts in the project 
 
B.   Tasks
The AM/LC performs the following tasks:
 
Management responsibility:
  • responsible for the orders and measures in the agricultural component that are assigned to him/her and for managing ±15 SRPC coordinators which are based at various locations in North Sumatera

Professional advisory services :
  • develops benchmark and organizes series of trainings to the rice farmers in order to improve rice production and value chains
  • advises stakeholders on identifying needs, developing concepts and strategies, and provides technical input
  • contributes to preparing and implementing the coordination process, joint project activities and work in the regions
  • monitors the development and implementation of project plans and activities in close consultation with project manager
  •  develops and organizes quality assurance measures and suggests necessary changes, improvements and initiatives
  • monitors project progress and the activities, reviews reports and documents on the progress of joint programs, identifies bottlenecks and recommends alternative management options

Networking and cooperation :
  • establishes good relationship with local partners in selected areas e.g. rice millers, farmer groups, local government, etc.
  • communicates and promotes the project’s interests and exchanges ideas and information for the benefit of the project;
  •  travels in the country when necessary, in accordance with project requirements and approval from project manager
  • integrating results and experience into teamwork and the work of all relevant groups
 
Knowledge management:
  • compiles information on issues related to the project and ensures knowledge transfer
  • contributes in developing strategies and technical concepts, including guidelines, manuals and procedures
  • draws up reports and presentation documents

Other duties/additional tasks
  • performs other duties and tasks given by the project manager and BRIA-Indonesia Focal Point
  • Carries out tasks relevant to the project, which may not be explicitly mentioned in the TOR.
C.   Requirements:
  • Bachelor degree in Agriculture or other related sectors
  • Good working knowledge of ITC technologies (related software, phone, fax, email, the internet) and computer applications (e.g. MS Office)
  • Good communication and facilitation skills (in Indonesian and English)
  • Good working relations with various actors in rice sector e.g. government, rice millers, rice farmers.
  •  3-5 years of professional work experience with agricultural input companies, international organizations, consultancies or civil society organizations
