Job Introduction
BBC Media Action is the independent international charity of the BBC which uses media to advance development worldwide. Our mission is to improve the quality of people’s lives in developing and transitional countries through innovative use of media. We do this through our focus on health, governance, livelihoods, climate change and humanitarian response. We work in partnerships that include governments, broadcasters, civil society institutions, donor agencies and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
BBC Media Action delivers a portfolio of media and communications
projects in Asia. We currently have teams in Afghanistan, Bangladesh,
Burma, Cambodia, India and Nepal, delivering governance, health,
resilience and humanitarian response projects. We are about to start a
two year resilience project in Indonesia, funded by DFID as part of a
Global Grant to BBC Media Action, producing a factual TV programme with
possible outreach, social media and mobile elements. We are recruiting
an experienced Project Director to manage the delivery of the project in
Indonesia.
Please note that this post is subject to confirmation of funding.
Main Responsibilities
You’ll report to the Asia Regional Director and be responsible for
the overall management and delivery of the Indonesia Resilience project,
and potentially other projects as they are secured. You will finalise
the project design and budget. You’ll ensure that the project delivers
on time, on budget and to high quality, and that the content responds to
audience needs and project objectives. You’ll manage the Series
Producer to oversee production of a ground-breaking TV series, while you
recruit and lead an Indonesia team to deliver the rest of the project,
including outreach and social media outputs. You’ll secure a broadcast
slot through building relationships in the media sector, finalise our
registration in Indonesia and set up an office, and play a significant
role in developing new business through including developing ideas and
partnerships and writing proposals.
The Ideal Candidate
You’ll bring considerable experience of managing complex projects,
ideally in the development or media sectors, and understand the role of
media in development. With significant experience in the effective
management of diverse teams, you’ll also have strong financial
management skills and experience using theory of change and research
insights to develop projects. You’ll draw on your experience working
with TV production staff, and understanding of public service
broadcasting, to apply your understanding of resilience issues to
creating exciting outputs. A confident public speaker, you’ll have a
proven ability to secure new business, present persuasively to potential
partners and write successful proposals, and have previously worked in a
developing country.
We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our
values and the way we behave are very important to us. Please make sure
you’ve read about our values and behaviours in the document attached
below. You’ll be asked questions relating to them as part of your
application for this role.
The post will be based initially in London, UK, with visits
to Indonesia, and will move to Indonesia once registration is secured
and pre-production commences.
