Bojonegoro, East Java
Program Summary - TANGGUH
TANGGUH
II (Taruna Bangga Usaha) is the second phase of a program that aims to increase
the capacity of youth in the area of Bojonegoro to be economically productive
and serve as civic leaders and agents of positive change. The program will work
with youth to improve their entrepreneurship skills, assist them to launch
their own enterprises and increase youth participation in civic life in their
communities. The program will also build capacity of local MFIs in order to
enable them to accommodate the needs of young entrepreneurs.
The
district of Bojonegoro is located in East Java province, on the border with Central Java province. Despite the progressive
per-capita-gross-domestic-product growth, Bojonegoro faces acute developmental
challenges. The region’s rate of unemployment is high and the level of youth
participation in civic and economic activities is low. Youth are often
marginalized and/or disengaged from local decision-making, leaving them to feel
isolated and powerless in affecting change. Without opportunities, they are
more vulnerable to becoming disillusioned which can lead to risky and
unproductive behavior, which may lead to instability. The discovery of oil and gas in the area, quickly
recognized as Southeast Asia’s largest deposit with an estimated 2 billion
barrels of oil, has led to a temporary increase in job opportunities during the
construction phase of the oil exploitation facilities but in the coming years
many of these jobs, especially those of young unskilled workers, are expected
to come to an end.
