BACKGROUND
The PREVENT project, managed by FHI 360, is funded by the United
States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Emerging
Pandemic Threats (EPT) Program. PREVENT
focuses its activities particularly on identifying behaviors and practices that
promote the emergence of new diseases with a non-human animal origin (zoonoses)
in order to fulfill its primary mandate of formulating and implementing
effective strategies and interventions to reduce threats and risks of new
outbreaks. The project focuses on three key groups of species of wild animals
that have been most frequently implicated in important outbreaks of emerging zoonotic
infectious diseases: nonhuman primates, rodents, and bats.
The PREVENT project is examining the demand and supply side of
wild animals in markets. In
collaboration with the Forestry Office in North Sulawesi PREVENT will collect
information on wildlife and market facilities in ten markets of North Sulawesi.
