Overview
One of CIFOR’s core research themes is on enhancing the role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Forests and Livelihoods Portfolio is one of three portfolios at CIFOR that contribute to this research theme.
The research officer will be part of the Livelihoods/GCS REDD+ Module-2 team. He/she will perform a variety of tasks, as needed and directed, and will participate in building a strong knowledge base for achieving the 3Es (effectiveness, efficiency, and equity) and co-benefits in REDD+ in Indonesia.

Duties and responsibilities
1) Participate in research:
- Assist in coordinating research/fieldwork in selected locations in Indonesia
- Participate in fieldwork as required
- Assist in identifying, hiring, and training consultants
- Maintain appropriate communications with key stakeholders and partners as requested by the country representative. These may include proponents, local and national government agencies, NGOs, private companies – if applicable, and donor organizations
- Maintain databases of Module 2 – Indonesia
- Oversee data entry and data cleaning
- Assist in (literature) review, collection of secondary data, data analysis, and other tasks supporting research
- Assist with the preparation and publication of research results/reports
- Assist in other research activities as required.
- Work with the project administrator and relevant staff in the management of consultant and intern contracts
- Assist the planning and maintaining of project budgeting
- Assist in reporting (minutes, translation, etc.)
- Assist in organizing workshops, training or field work
- Other duties as required by the project.
- Contribute to the organization of and participate in activities, meetings and discussions
- Participate in meetings related to the project and project activities outside CIFOR
- Other tasks as needed.
- Preferably Master’s degree in social sciences, statistics, economics, forestry, environmental studies or other related discipline
- Strong background in statistics and quantitative analysis
- Relevant experience (3 – 5 years)
- Familiarity with forests and climate change/REDD+ is helpful but not required
- Good English language skills, both oral and written
- Strong computer skills in word processing, excel, database and other relevant office applications.
- Competent in personal organization and priority setting with the ability to work effectively under time pressure and manage multiple priorities
- Good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with people in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment
- Experience working with a wide and diverse network of groups and individuals
- Demonstrates initiative, and capable of working independently and as an effective team player.
- This is a nationally recruited position. CIFOR offers a competitive remuneration commensurate with skills and experience.
- The initial contract is for 2 years with the possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of this position, and available resources. The position is based in Bogor, Indonesia.
