Theme: Climate Change Adaptation in a coffee landscape
Timeframe: To be completed by 13 December 2013 (number
of days TBD)
Lutheran
World Relief is a US based international non-profit relief and development
organization works to end poverty, injustice and human suffering by empowering
communities to help themselves. Lutheran World Relief Indonesia is calling for
expressions of interest for consultant/s to undertake climate adaptation and
mitigation assessment of coffee production in Takengon, Aceh. The consultant/s must
have a higher level degree’s in climatology and agronomy with demonstrated knowledge
in undertaking technical assessments specific to the coffee sector.
The
overall goal of the
consultancy is to conduct desk review and interviews so as to produce a technical
report on the projected affects from
climate change on coffee production in Takengon region (Central Aceh) including
mitigation strategies over the
next 5-20 years for LWR.
Specifically, the consultancy will:
- Conduct climate modelling prediction based on the extrapolation of climate data including predicted climate change parameters (ie: temperature, rainfall patterns) and also importantly the impact of deforestation/land conversion
- Gather an understanding of what farming families understand about climate change and how they feel it currently affects coffee production including proposing ways to develop farmers’ capacities so that they can adapt and/or mitigate to the effects of climate change
- Review the carbon markets and opportunities for systems that can be offered to smallholder farmers/cooperatives
Further details will be
provided to the short- listed consultant/s.
If you are interested please
provide by 24 November 2013 in writing (English) the following:
- A copy of your CV/s including details on how your skills set would match the consultancy
- Total daily rate package (this includes meals/fee/incidentals), transportation will be calculated separately
- Availability
- Assuming that the consultancy will be a maximum of 10 days in total a brief one page overview on the proposed process to undertake the consultancy
Applicants should send the
expressions of interest to lwrindonesia1@gmail.com
Background info if needed to put into

Coffee likes a pretty narrow range
of temperatures, and one of the hallmarks, really, of climate change will be
increased extremes in temperatures," Todd Sanford, a climate scientist
from the Union of Concerned Scientists, said.
Scientists say climate change will
cause heavier rains, longer periods of drought, and higher rates of insect
infestation in the tropical areas where coffee is grown -- factors that could
have a devastating effect on future coffee production.
Smallholder coffee farmers all over the world have always had to manage
good and bad coffee harvest years, as well as deal with a high dependency on
climatic conditions and consequently, volatile coffee prices. Now, they face a
new challenge: climate change and its negative impacts on agricultural
production. In several coffee growing regions we can now
observe that rising temperatures are affecting smallholder farmers. Coffee production
areas decrease moving to higher altitudes, coffee quality decreases and changes in pest and
disease patterns. In addition, rainfall is already becoming more unpredictable
and is causing a loss of soil and soil fertility and even landslides.with all of
these uncertainties, poor smallholder farmers in rural areas are going to be
more susceptible to climate change. Due to a lack of information, a lack of
training in adaptation and limited access to technical and financial
assistance, smallholder farmers are going to be affected most by climate
change
What do these changes mean for smallholder coffee farmers?
Use farmers knowledge to guide adaptation processes
The negative impacts on coffee production, should make us think about
solutions or at least about how to react to climate change. We can still reduce
the amount of greenhouse gases we produce. However, mitigation alone will not
be enough. Especially in the agriculture sector, adapting production to
minimize climate vulnerability and defining the necessary
adaptation strategies and how these can affect greenhouse gases is also
necessary.
Mitigation strategies
Techniques that stop, slow, or reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere.
Adaptation strategies Techniques that allow us to live
with, and manage climate change, through understanding and minimizing its
risks
- The first objective is gather an understanding of what farming families understand about climate change and how they feel it currently affects coffee production and the risks to future coffee production
- The second objective propose ways to develop farmers’ capacities so that they can adapt to climate change by applying soil, shade and pest management techniques as well as more efficient water use in their coffee plantations
- Participatory analysis, a medium and long-term adaptation strategy for producer organizations and guide to implementing options for climate change mitigation in coffee plantations as well as in processing coffee.
- Review the carbon markets and opportunities for systems offered smallholder farmers
- Prediction on production related to climate change
- What techniques need to be improved so that the coffee plantations will be more resistant to climate change?
- What skills need to be improved, in order to apply these techniques?
