Assistant Political Officer- Human Rights and Good Governance (1 year contract initially) 

The British Embassy in Jakarta is part of a world-wide network of 230 Diplomatic Posts, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We are currently looking to recruit an Assistant Political Officer covering human rights and good governance.

Indonesia and the United Kingdom have a strong relationship and we work closely together to promote economic prosperity, international security, conflict prevention, and educational links and to tackle climate change.

In order to strengthen our engagement further the British Embassy is seeking to hire someonewho is able to handle a broad range of tasks working in the Political team but primarily assisting with human rights/ good governance and legal related affairs.  This is an excellent role for someone looking to expand their work experience. Experience of working or studying in a British/ international environment is preferred.

Job duties are likely to include: keeping the Embassy updated (providing short oral and written reports in English- usually maximum 1 page) about human rights and good governance issues in Indonesia particularly concerning the rule of law; developing and managing a broad range of contacts at working level; working on small-scale UK funded human rights projects (from project concept development all the way through to project monitoring and evaluation). The successful applicant will be part of the political team and will work closely with others to provide the Indonesian human rights perspective and where necessary basic Indonesian legal system information on a number of cross-cutting political issues.

This will be an exciting and challenging role in the Embassy, working closely with colleagues in the political, media and communications, defence and commercial teams, as well as the British Council.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Keep the Embassy informed by providing short oral and written reports (usually around 1 page) about human rights and good governance issues in Indonesia- particularly in the areas of rule of law, business and human rights and land rights. 
  • Be the point of contact/ reference for information and understanding about basic information about the Indonesian legal system (criminal, public administration etc- not corporate/ commercial) and constitutional matters.
  • Understand and report on the Indonesian government and civil society’s approach to a broad range of human rights issues. 
  • Develop and maintain an excellent network of contacts throughout Indonesia; across government, academia, media and civil society.
  • Propose innovative opportunities, including through projects, to help deliver UK policy priorities and offer advice on handling any associated risks.
  • Update on regional and global influences in the implementation and observance of human rights in Indonesia- particularly the UN International Human Rights frameworks and ASEAN.
  • Facilitate and participate in meetings, visits and events.
Qualifications and experience:
  • A degree majoring in a subject such as Law,  International Relations, Politics or a similar subject is essential; a postgraduate degree is desirable. Fresh graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Excellent understanding of both the International Human Rights framework, including UN International Conventions and the Indonesian Human Rights scene.
  • An understanding of international relations and familiarity with the UK either through work or study is preferred
  • Fluent communication and networking skills in English (both oral and written, IELTS 6.5 or higher) as well as good spoken Indonesian.
  • Formal legal experience not required but some basic knowledge of Indonesian law and contacts within the legal system would be highly desirable.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work under light supervision
  • Strong interpersonal and team-working skill
  • Good IT skills and experience, including MS Office 
Salary:

The British Embassy is an equal opportunities employer. We will offer a generous package of salary starting at IDR 9,500,000 per month and benefits, including annual leave and medical cover, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Evidence of previous salary awards should be provided along with the application. Training opportunities in Jakarta and our regional training centre in Singapore are also available.

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. In relation to this, the successful candidate will need to arrange his/her own Police Certificate. You must also have the permit to work in Indonesia in order to apply.
