Frankfurt Zoological Society’s goal is to work with and for people to secure biodiversity in key ecosystems worldwide as the basis for all life and the livelihoods of present and future generations. The Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) operates since 2002 with the aim to establish a self sustainable orangutan population in the Bukit Tiga puluh Landscape. The program already released more than150 orangutans.

Orangutan reintroduction in Bukit Tigapuluh follows the soft releaseapproach; this means post release protocols are followed over an extended period of time until the released animal is deemed capable to survive without additional support. Post release monitoring includes tracking of orangutans by means of radio telemetry, post release medical checks, if necessary supportive medication and supplemental feeding of new released orangutans.

The orangutan reintroduction programme field manager will spend a considerable amount of time in thefield based at the reintroductioncenter;only basic officeequipment is available. A good part of the work time will be spentimplementing andchecking work schedules and procedures at the release stations.

The orangutan reintroduction programme field manager will work fully independent and self-responsible therefore specific knowledge some initial training at orangutan release centers before dispatched to work in Bukit Tigapuluh.

The Bukit Tigapuluh Landscape Conservation Program offers a vacancy for the following positions  Orangutan Release Programme Field Manager

The successful candidate will work in the remote forests of Bukit Tigapuluh. The Orangutan Release Programme Field Manager will coordinate its work with the Bukit Tigapuluh Landscape Conservation Programme Manager.

Job summary:

The work of the Orangutan Reintroduction Programme Field Manager is field based. FZS runs two field facilities in Bukit Tigapuluh/Jambi with very basicoffice facilities. The successful candidate will supervise two station managers in scientifically sound reintroduction techniques, supervise and support report writing, support the development of weekly work schedules and organize data collection.

The Orangutan Reintroduction Programme Field Manager will analyze field data and produce quarterly written reports in good English. Part of the responsibility is the supervision of station facilities and their maintenance (in cooperation with the stations managers), therefore a sense for technical equipment is essential. Regular checks on facility conditions and supervision of monitoring schedules for equipment and facilities are part of the job. The successful candidate is required to develop solutions for technical/infrastructure problems. Regular orangutan monitoring trips will be executed in cooperation with station managersand with the radio telemetry tracking teams to check on orangutans already living independent in the forest of Bukit Tigapuluh. Work shifts are usually three weeks in the field (divided between two field stations, with one day off every five work days) followed by one week off duty. The candidate must be very flexible as the programme operates two field stations and a holding facility in Jambi city for more intensive care. Long hours of travel are part of the job.

Duties:
  • Supervise station managers in implementing SOPs
  • Develop work schedules for field station staff
  • Co-ordinate reintroduction schedules with station managers
  • Develop SOPs for station staff due to demand
  • Analyze behavioral data of released orangutans
  • Evaluate orangutan adaptation progress pre and post release
  • Co-ordinate work schedules with programme veterinarianand orangutan trainer team
  • Assess staff training needs and post training implementation 
  • Ensuresite management systems are standardized and replicable
  • Professional report writingin English
  • Gather information and data for regular reports 
  • Support trans-location of orangutans
  • Facilitate researchers or guests
Essential skills
At least five years professional work experience as staff manager (>10 staff)
  • University degree in biology, conservation, forestry
  • Good physical and mental fitness to work extended periods in the field
  • Ability to keep a cool head in fast-paced, stressful situations 
  • Ability to delegate appropriately according to skills and abilities of staff 
  • Able to share responsibilities as part of a team
  • Judgment to know when to ask for help
  • Able to work under pressure with minimum supervision 
  • Good report writing skills 
  • Computer literate(MS Office, Word, Excel
  • Good interpersonal skills, communication skills and pleasant personality
  • Good English writing skills
